Why is preventing falls so important? Well, for us in Florida, it\u2019s the leading cause of non-fatal injury related hospital admissions. And among those 65 and older, unintentional falls are the leading cause of injury deaths in Florida. That\u2019s a staggering fact, enough to make us fall down! But let\u2019s see what we can do to prevent that.<\/p>\n<p>Most falls result from three main risk factors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Physical: Changes in your body that can increase your risk<\/li>\n<li>Behavioral: Things we do or don\u2019t do that increase your risk<\/li>\n<li>Environmental : Hazards in our home or community<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many of these risk factors can be changed. Pick one to tackle!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Physical inactivity<\/li>\n<li>Home Environment<\/li>\n<li>Vision<\/li>\n<li>Medication Use<\/li>\n<li>Fear of falling<\/li>\n<li>Social Isolation<\/li>\n<li>Weakness<\/li>\n<li>Improper use of assistive devices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Things we can\u2019t change:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Age<\/li>\n<li>Gender<\/li>\n<li>Background<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So what can you do to prevent a fall?<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Exercise to improve your balance<\/li>\n<li>Have your doctor of pharmacist review your medications<\/li>\n<li>Have your vision checked<\/li>\n<li>Make your home safer<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>At Assisting Hands, we provide a free home safety inspection with every initial assessment.
