{"id":1977,"date":"2018-05-01T23:14:36","date_gmt":"2018-05-01T23:14:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/assistinghands.com\/44\/?p=1977"},"modified":"2018-05-01T23:14:36","modified_gmt":"2018-05-01T23:14:36","slug":"older-americans-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/assistinghands.com\/44\/texas\/westaustin\/blog\/older-americans-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Older Americans Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 style=\"text-align: center\"><b>May is Older Americans Month<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1978 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/assistinghands.com\/44\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/69\/2018\/05\/OAMLogo.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"362\" height=\"148\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The month of May finds many of us enjoying springtime while the weather is warm and pleasant in anticipation of the joys and challenges of what might be a long, hot summer here in Central Texas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So along with the nice weather, May is also designated as <\/span><b>Older Americans Month. \u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The contributions of older Americans were first formally acknowledged in 1963 when President John F. Kennedy declared May 1963 as <\/span><b>\u201cSenior Citizens Month.\u201d \u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Back in 1963 only 17 million people fit the definition of a senior citizen. \u00a0Since that time, it has been celebrated throughout the country with events and activities focusing on the unique role that older adults play in our society. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">So, what has changed since the days of JFK? \u00a0Well, for one thing, the US Census Bureau reported that the number of people 65+ has more than doubled to over 41 million in 2011. This number is expected to more than double again to reach more 92 million by 2060. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another change is the observation that there seems to be a shift in the terminology from \u201csenior citizens\u201d to \u201cseniors\u201d to \u201colder adults\u201d or \u201colder Americans.\u201d \u00a0No matter what name you give the folks in this demographic group, it\u2019s certainly not a shrinking population.
