It can be downright dangerous. According to the Red Cross, excessive heat has caused more deaths than all other weather events in recent years, including flooding.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here are a few tips from the Red Cross for staying safe during periods of extreme heat:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Be sure to have an emergency preparedness kit ready in case of power outages brought on by excessive power usage in your town.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. \u00a0Water is the best option.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Eat frequent, small meals. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wear light weight, light colored clothing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Time strenuous activity to the cooler early morning hours. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Check on animals frequently and make sure they have plenty of water.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Check on friends, family and neighbors, especially those living alone or who may more likely to be affected by the heat. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Central Texas Family Eldercare offers heat relief to the most vulnerable members of our community through the Summer Fan Drive. \u00a0The program provides inexpensive fans to help thousands beat the Texas heat. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This year\u2019s \u201cFans from Fans\u201d fan collection and fundraiser event takes place all day on June 15 beginning at 7:00 am at Threadgill\u2019s World Headquarters and includes pancake breakfast and music and events for kids. \u00a0The evening program for adults takes place at Hanovers 2.0. Join the fun at either of these events to help your neighbors in need stay cool.
