According to The Parkinson\u2019s Foundation, approximately 60,000 American\u2019s are diagnosed with PD each year, which is why the entire month of April is dedicated to raising awareness of the disease and providing information to those who are unfamiliar with it, and its effects on people. As part of our ongoing mission to help the community of West Austin–and all of Austin, Texas–we at Assisting Hands would like to take some time this April, Parkinson’s Awareness Month, and discuss the disease.<\/p>\n

Defining Parkinson\u2019s Disease<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Although nearly one million people in the United States are living with Parkinson’s Disease<\/a> right now, not everyone is entire sure what it is. So here goes.<\/p>\n

In short, Parkinson\u2019s disease is a neurodegenerative disease that affects dopamine-producing neurons in specific brain areas. In other words, the disease slowly damages the central nervous system, and can have several telltale deleterious effects on a person.<\/p>\n

The cause of PD is unknown, and while there are some treatment options available, there is currently no cure. However, those with the disease can sustain a productive lifestyle when using their resources and staying active in the PD community. It is important to note that living a quality life will depend on how individuals understand and plan to manage their symptoms.<\/p>\n

Symptoms and Signs of Parkinson’s Disease<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Symptoms of PD<\/a> can develop slowly over several years and are often different from one person to another. People with PD may experience tremors in their hands, slowness of movement, limb rigidity, and balance or gate problems. As previously mentioned, there are no standard treatments for Parkinson\u2019s because not everyone\u2019s symptoms are the same. Doctors may suggest medications or surgical therapy as well as making lifestyle changes. Lifestyle changes recommended by outpatient therapists include:<\/p>\n
