During Alzheimer\u2019s and Brain Awareness Month, I would like to reflect on one special client that came to Assisting Hands of West Houston with Alzeheimer\u2019s. We will call him Mr. Client.<\/p>\n
Mr. Client was a humble man, who was a soldier in his early days and understood the consequences of war. He was a family man, a hero to his two daughters. Mr. Client was a businessman, a pillar in his community and a man of God who volunteered at his church every week for over 35 years.<\/p>\n
When I met him he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer\u2019s a couple of years earlier and was struggling with his decline. He had moments of anger, fear, and confusion. He was a proud father and grandfather who felt embarrassed and useless. He was the protector and provider of his family, who realized he could no longer continue with these responsibilities and this weighed heavily on his heart. The thought that his frail wife had to care for him or that his daughters had to help him with toileting gave him even more anxiety. By his posture I could tell he felt broken and hopeless.<\/p>\n
When I explained to him that our caregivers at Assisting Hands of West Houston could help him with activities of daily living such as toileting, bathing, dressing, and running errands; relieving his wife and daughters from these tasks, he regained a bit of dignity and thanked me.<\/p>\n
