You&#8217;re not alone in asking. Texas DSHS estimates about 459,000 Texans aged 65 and older live with Alzheimer&#8217;s, and over a million family caregivers support them. Refer to Texas Department of State Health Services Alzheimer&#8217;s Disease Program <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dshs.texas.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/borderhealth\/TFBHO-Docs\/handouts\/Alzheimer%E2%80%99s-Disease-Program-12.11.2024.pdf\">presentation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Early signs families often miss<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Alzheimer&#8217;s Association lists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dshs.texas.gov\/alzheimers-disease\/warning-signs\">10 early warning signs<\/a> and separates them from typical age-related changes. Forgetting why you walked into a room is normal, but not recognizing a room in your own home may not be. Common patterns include:<\/p>\n<ul dir=\"ltr\">\n<li>Needing frequent schedule reminders or asking the same questions repeatedly, versus occasionally forgetting a name and remembering it later.<\/li>\n<li>Trouble following a familiar recipe or paying monthly bills, versus an occasional error with household finances.<\/li>\n<li>Getting confused about the date or season, or having trouble driving to a familiar place.<\/li>\n<li>Changes in mood or personality, or withdrawal from hobbies and social activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">One symptom on its own isn&#8217;t a diagnosis. If you notice a pattern, see a doctor. Texas DSHS advises seeing a doctor as soon as you notice symptoms that aren&#8217;t typical signs of aging, because early action helps protect quality of life.<\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\"><strong>What in-home dementia support looks like day to day<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Familiar surroundings can be calming for someone living with memory loss. In the Alzheimer&#8217;s Association&#8217;s 2024 report, 59% of Texas dementia caregivers had at least one chronic condition and 26.7% reported depression. Respite care gives you time to rest, run errands, or simply breathe while your loved one is in good hands. Asking for help doesn&#8217;t mean giving up.
