This is a great service. I needed assistance for a few weeks after surgery and found this service through my surgeon’s office. It was genius! I was surprised that more people don’t use this service when recovering from surgery. There are no words to describe the miraculous service of Assisting Hands but I will try. My mother has Alzheimers and her partner was terminal, suffering from prostate cancer. Both were housed in Independent Living in Arlington, Virginia so our family was 100% dependent upon AH to care for them. AH was called upon to assist in an extremely difficult situation with two well loved individuals who had vastly different needs. Unlike others, AH was able to successfully get my mother to bathe, dress herself properly, take walks and engage in activities. During the pandemic of 2020, my mother’s enforced isolation led to a downturn in her mental abilities. After a few months, she could barely put a sentence together. She struggled to speak and make herself understood. She was anxious all the time. Our assumption was that each new crisis – even if it seemed small to us – took up so much room in her head that she did not have a lot of brain power left for daily functions. Her geographically-distributed offspring were constantly scrambling to solve each new problem that arose. We all felt like we were drowning, one crisis after another.
After two scary “incidents”, we realized we needed to (and we were also prompted to) make some changes. Someone at her facility recommended that we contact Assisting Hands. They send companions into the home, allowing seniors to remain in place longer. They carefully select the right person for each client and they put together customized programs based on the client’s interests and needs. Managers visit the clients regularly and send regular reports and pictures to the family. The managers are also available to our family, and are extremely responsive when we have questions or concerns.
Assisting Hands has brought my mother renewed human contact, daily exercise, light cleaning help, light meal prep, activities, discussion, and problem solving. After just a few months, my mother’s cognitive abilities have improved. The pictures we’ve received tell the story. The first one from her assessment showed a face that was frighteningly vacant. More recent ones show a face that is engaged in the world.
