Spouses and widows of veterans also receive monetary aid from VA programs.<\/p>\n

What is long-term care?<\/h2>\n

Care received at home is known as long-term care<\/a>. Caregivers may be family members or paid home health care aids. Nurses and therapists are among the professionals qualified to provide medical care at a care recipient\u2019s home. Care may be non-medical or medical in nature or a combination of both.<\/p>\n

Long-term care may also be received in adult day care centers, assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Care may be prescribed by a physician to treat a specific condition. Physical, occupational and speech therapies are designed to improve an ailing senior\u2019s quality of life.<\/p>\n

Who needs long-term care?<\/h2>\n

Older individuals who succumb to serious health conditions depend on others to perform the activities of daily living and often require long-term care. Long-term care is intended to assist the elderly with ADLs, like eating, bathing, grooming and mobility, among other essential life tasks.<\/p>\n

As the years progress, seniors are likely to lean on long-term care, especially as frailty gradually weakens their physical capabilities or disabilities worsen over time. Strokes, heart attacks and dementia are severe health events that commonly affect aging persons and necessitate some form of long-term care.<\/p>\n

According to research statistics from 2017, the number of veterans over the age of 65 is 47 percent. At some point, many veterans in this age bracket will require long-term care. Veterans who participate in the VA\u2019s health care system find financial support when it comes to financing long-term care for veterans.<\/p>\n

What is the Aid & Attendance program?<\/h2>\n

The VA runs a pension program called Aid & Attendance. This pension is provided in addition to the monthly pensions already received by veterans. Medical and financial eligibility requirements must be met in order for veterans to receive the Aid & Attendance benefits.<\/p>\n

How do veterans qualify for Aid & Attendance?<\/h2>\n

\"Veterans-Home-care-services\"<\/p>\n

Veterans who have served 90 days on active duty, with at least one day during a time of war, are eligible to apply for the VA pension program Aid & Attendance. Veterans\u2019 surviving spouses are also eligible to apply for the program.<\/p>\n

Certain medical qualifications are to be met in order to be eligible for the Aid & Attendance Improved Pension. The veteran should require the assistance of others to perform the activities of daily living, including bathing, eating and dressing. Housebound individuals also qualify.<\/p>\n

Veterans who experience limited vision, are mentally incompetent or are physically incapacitated are eligible to apply for the pension program. Veterans who apply should submit a medical evaluation from a physician along with their application. Large medical expenses are also given due consideration.<\/p>\n

How do veterans apply for Aid & Attendance?<\/h2>\n

A letter should be sent to the Pension Management Center located in the veteran\u2019s state. Veterans may also visit their local benefit office to submit their application. Regional offices may be found using the VA Facility Locator listed in the Veterans Administration website.<\/p>\n

What is the Survivors Pension with Aid & Attendance?<\/h2>\n

Surviving spouses and widows of wartime veterans are eligible for a program called Survivors Pension with Aid & Attendance. Certain eligibility requirements must be met in order for women to receive monetary benefits\u2014up to $1,209 per month\u2014from the VA.<\/p>\n

Marriage to a wartime veteran, limited income and requiring assistance with the activities of daily living are among the four criteria that spouses and widows should meet.<\/p>\n

What is the Housebound Allowance?<\/h2>\n

Housebound Allowance is a VA pension program that financially assists veterans who are restricted to their homes due to a permanent disability. Veterans and their spouses may either qualify for the Housebound Allowance or the Aid & Attendance pension program\u2014but not both.<\/p>\n

What is the VA Medical Benefits Package?<\/h2>\n

\"Veteran-Home-Health-Care-Services\"All veterans with clinical needs qualify for the VA Medical Benefits Package, if services are provided in their region. The Home and Community Based Services<\/a> provided by the VA include home based primary care, skilled home health care and adult day health care, among other services.<\/p>\n

While more than one type of service is available through the VA Medical Benefits Package, veterans find their long-term care needs are met by the VA without receiving direct financial assistance (such as with the Aid & Attendance pension program).<\/p>\n

What is the Veterans Pension?<\/h2>\n

The Veterans Pension is provided to low-income veterans who are either disabled, over the age of 65, who receive skilled nursing care or who receive Social Security Disability Insurance. Pension funds may be used to help offset the costs of long-term care.<\/p>\n
