The 2026 theme for Older Americans Month, Champion Your Health, highlights the importance of wellness, connection, and active living for older adults. Throughout May, a wide range of programs, resources, and community support are available to help seniors celebrate this meaningful month and prioritize their well-being. In Las Vegas, older adults are also invited to take part in a special artistic experience this May, an engaging way to honor creativity, celebrate life, and embrace the journey of aging.
Champion Your Health
The Administration for Community Living (ACL) observes Older Americans Month each May. This month is set aside to recognize the many ongoing achievements of and contributions by the nation’s seniors. It is also a time to reaffirm the community’s commitment to serving the needs of the older population.
Per the ACL’s 2026 theme, the three pillars of healthy aging are prevention, wellness, and personal responsibility. Prevention efforts include seeking preventive medical care. Seniors who make informed decisions that promote their independence actively engage in maintaining their overall wellness.
Taking personal responsibility to age successfully involves making proactive choices to manage health and exploring options for future care, such as licensed home care agencies. Advocating for oneself is among the foundations of healthy aging and seniors who are unable to rely on caregivers.
Feeling empowered as an individual’s age is a key factor in quality of life. Community partnerships, self-management, and evidenced-based approaches give the elderly the means to empower themselves, helping them lead lives of independence, maintain control over their routines, and preserve their dignity.
Activities and Events for Older Americans Month in Las Vegas
Older Americans Month in Las Vegas offers a variety of engaging activities designed to promote creativity, wellness, and social connection. Whether you’re looking to explore the arts, meet new people, or focus on healthy aging, there are meaningful ways to celebrate throughout May.
One of the highlights is the annual “Celebrating Life!” Senior Art Exhibit, hosted by the city and local arts organizations. Held at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, this event showcases artwork created by adults ages 50 and older. The exhibit includes multiple artistic categories, from painting and photography to sculpture, and culminates in a public reception and awards ceremony at the end of the month. It’s both an inspiring cultural experience and a celebration of lifelong creativity. (More below)
For those interested in health and community resources, events like the LivingWell Senior Expo bring together seniors, caregivers, and local organizations for a day focused on wellness and connection. Attendees can explore educational booths, participate in interactive activities, and learn more about services that support healthy aging, all in a lively, social environment.
Social gatherings are another important part of the month. Local groups, such as senior meetups and community breakfasts, provide relaxed opportunities to connect with others, share conversations, and build friendships. These types of recurring events help reduce isolation and encourage ongoing engagement beyond May.
For a more immersive cultural experience, seniors can also take part in guided outings like visits to the Neon Museum. These programs offer a chance to explore Las Vegas history in an interactive, accessible way, blending learning with nostalgia and social interaction.
In addition to these featured events, many local parks, recreation centers, and community organizations offer classes and activities throughout the month, such as fitness sessions, art workshops, and group games, encouraging older adults to stay active, engaged, and connected. Together, these opportunities make Older Americans Month in Las Vegas a vibrant celebration of health, creativity, and community.
“Celebrating Life” Arts Competition
Las Vegas seniors are in for a treat this year as the city in partnership with the Las Vegas Arts Commission is sponsoring an annual fine arts competition. “Celebrating Life” is an exhibit opening, reception and awards ceremony held on May 29, 2026, at the Charleston Heights Arts Center.
South Nevada artists aged 50 and older are encouraged to submit their artwork to be judged. Fine art submissions are held in a range of categories, including hand-built and wheel-thrown ceramics, non-ceramic sculpture, watercolor, and gouache. Drawings and pastels are also accepted.
Older photographers with portfolios in black-and-white, digital, or electrophotography, among other photography forms, may submit their best work. Hobbyists and professionals alike have an opportunity to showcase their stunning photographs for public viewing at this popular art competition for seniors.
Las Vegas is rich with scenic landscapes of unique local flora, historical markers, and iconic spots, like the Red Rock Canyon and Seven Magic Mountains. Many of the city’s retirees are avid photographers who explore and capture on film the unique locations in The Silver State.
The “Celebrating Life” exhibit is a well-attended arts event during which senior photographers and hobbyists can show off their most memorable shots. Mixed media artists are likewise encouraged to submit their fiber art, collages, printmaking, computer graphics and other works.
The meet-the-artists reception allows the public to express their admiration for or personally congratulate elderly participants for their achievements in the arts. Notable prizes are awarded, from $500 for Best in Show to honorable mention award plaques for winners in each art category.
An Opportunity for Recognition
Artwork for the final exhibition runs from May 29 to September 10, 2026, at the Charleston Heights Arts Center Ballroom. This long-running exhibition is another opportunity for a talented older South Nevada artist to be recognized for their remarkable contribution to the arts.
Seniors whose artwork is not juried at the “Celebrate Life” event are still given an opportunity to have their work displayed. The Salon des Refuses exhibit houses the non-juried artwork from May 29 to September 10, 2026, at the Charleston Heights Arts Center Gallery.
An Occasion for Community Involvement
The “Celebrate Life” exhibit is in its 26th year, giving older adults with a knack for the arts the exciting chance to participate in the vibrant local arts scene. Entering artwork is free, which is an enticing incentive for elderly residents living on a fixed income.
Participating in the “Celebrate Life” art competition is an opportunity for talented seniors to be recognized. The praise and admiration they receive bolster their spirits and motivate them to continue producing fine works of art that captivate the public’s imagination.
Elderly individuals who are not artistically inclined can still participate as attendees. Open to the public, the “Celebrate Life” event is a chance to mingle with fellow art lovers, discuss paintings or watercolors, and feel inspired by the immensely talented local arts community.
The shared love of art, meaningful social interactions, and validation for artistic endeavors demonstrate how this annual art competition leads the way in joyfully bringing together the older adult community. It shows that seniors are still valued and their efforts continue to be recognized on a wide scale.
