Remember the Value of Home Care During National Family Caregivers Month

November 9, 2022psutton

As a family caregiver, what are you doing that is burning you out? National Family Caregivers Month takes place each November. It’s a time to address all that you’re doing each day and why it’s vital to have help.

Your dad has heart disease and needs help with many aspects of daily care. Are you doing so much for him that you lose sight of your own needs for breaks and self-care? Home care is invaluable. Here’s how it can help.

He Has Too Many Appointments to Handle

Your dad has regular appointments with his primary care doctor, his cardiology team, his physical therapist, etc. When he has multiple appointments every week, you’re the one getting him ready to leave the home on time, driving him to those appointments, waiting until he’s done, stopping by the pharmacy to get updated prescriptions, and taking him home.

Every new appointment requires you to take more time off work. It’s all unpaid time off at this point, and it’s impacting your finances. A home care provider can take him to appointments throughout the week so that you can avoid missing work or other engagements of your own.

Your Dad Takes Many Medications at Different Times

Your dad needs your help remembering which pills he has to take on an empty stomach soon as he gets up. He has other pills that have to be taken after a meal. He struggles to keep track of all of it. You have to help him with medication management for that reason.

With home care services, your dad has someone else offering medication reminders. It takes some of the pressure off your shoulders. Help when you have the time, but don’t quit your job, reduce your hours, or give up your social life to be with him every second of the day.

You Can’t Do It All

As hard as you try, you cannot balance your dad’s care needs with your work, your children’s schedules, and your home’s upkeep. You’re so busy cleaning his home, doing his laundry, and cooking his meals that you’re ignoring the things you need at your home.

By the time you’ve shopped for his groceries, carried them in, and cooked his meals, you still have a 45-minute drive to get back to your house. You’re too tired to shop for your own items, and you couldn’t do it when you were with him as you had perishable items to buy.

After cleaning his home, changing his sheets, and washing and drying everything, you don’t want to have to do all of that at your home, too. It’s too much work. It’s time to consider having someone else help with the housework, laundry, and shopping he needs to do.

You Get to Take Breaks

The most important aspect of home care is that you can take breaks. Have a day off and visit friends. Spend a day with your kids or stay home and have a lazy day in your pajamas. A home care aide can help your dad while you’re taking a day off.

Arrange home care sooner rather than waiting until you’re burned out. If you keep pushing yourself, it can affect your mental, emotional, and physical health. Call a home care agency to get started.
