2024 is shaping up to be the hottest summer on record. Even in a normal summer, heat illnesses are a big problem for seniors. More than 80 percent of the people in the U.S. who die of heat-related causes are over age 60.
As we age, our bodies become less sensitive to changes in temperature. To make matters worse, many chronic illnesses and medications (such as beta blockers for high blood pressure) make it harder for our bodies to respond and adjust to heat.
We created this educational poster to highlight signs to watch out for when you are out in the sun with your family and friends. If you see any of these, make sure you get help right away. Heat stroke especially can damage vital organs and cause all sorts of havoc.
Stay cool out there!
