Sudden confusion is a serious condition that demands immediate medical care. Also known as delirium, sudden confusion causes changes in an older adult\u2019s behavior and alertness. A number of causes can be responsible for triggering this condition in the elderly.<\/p>\n

A senior can become disoriented and unaware of the time of day, their location or even their identity. They may be unable to speak or think clearly. Affected individuals may even see things that are not there (hallucinations<\/a>). When these symptoms occur, it is known as sudden confusion.<\/p>\n

A concerned caregiver<\/a> can discern whether a senior is experiencing delirium by asking for their name, today\u2019s date, and their age. If the older adult is unable to answer, it is a sign that they need prompt medical care. Sudden confusion needs to be treated, as it can be life-threatening.<\/p>\n

Symptoms of delirium manifest in several ways. Oftentimes, the condition worsens at night, which means the senior is awake instead of experiencing a quality night\u2019s sleep; being unable to rest at night can be an issue, as it leads to the person feeling sleepy during the day.<\/p>\n

1. Health Conditions<\/h3>\n

As mentioned, sudden confusion may appear over time in dementia patients. Other medical conditions that cause delirium include stroke, seizure, and transient ischemic attack (TIA is a condition that occurs when the blood supply to the brain is temporarily blocked). A stroke can occur after a TIA.<\/p>\n

2. Hypoxia<\/h3>\n

Hypoxia, which is a lack of oxygen in the blood, is another cause of sudden confusion in the elderly. A severe asthma attack can cause hypoxia. Or, the senior may experience problems with their lungs or heart\u2014either of which can trigger a case of hypoxia.<\/p>\n

Some side effects of prescription medications can produce delirium. Drugs, like digoxin, steroids, diuretics, and opiates, are responsible for causing sudden confusion in the elderly. Diuretics, for instance, are associated with electrolyte imbalances, which can lead to confusion in those who take them.<\/p>\n

6. Drugs and Alcohol<\/h3>\n

Abusing illegal drugs or withdrawing from them can spur sudden confusion in older people. Likewise, the abuse of alcohol or alcohol withdrawal can do the same. A senior who drinks excessively may experience alcohol poisoning, which can lead to delirium.<\/p>\n

Less common causes of sudden confusion in the elderly include a vitamin B1 deficiency, a brain tumor, and a severely underactive thyroid gland.
