This disorder is progressive and irreversible in the brain. It’s also the most frequently diagnosed kind of dementia. Alzheimer’s disease impacts portions of the brain which are used for language, thinking, problem-solving, remembering, and other various cognitive skills. It can substantially impact the ability of a person to keep doing their typical daily routine. Alzheimer’s is something which can impact an individual’s mood and personality. Those with this disorder might get confused, agitated, fearful, withdrawn, angry, anxious, depressed, or suspicious. As the disease progresses, it gets more serious with more portions of the brain suffering damage, potentially involving the ones that manage basic physical functions like walking and talking. Eventually, those with Alzheimer’s wind up bedridden, needing around-the-clock assistance with basic activities like drinking and eating. In the end, the disease is fatal. No cure for Alzheimer’s exists currently, but there are treatments which can temporarily alleviate symptoms. Medical researchers and scientists are laboring to learn what the biological pathways behind this disease are, with goals of discovering new and improved options, both drugs and nondrug alike. This disease was named for Alois Alzheimer who was a German neuropathologist and psychiatrist who had noticed in 1906 brain-tissue changes from a woman that had been a fatality of an as-yet-unknown mental illness involving unpredictable behavior, language problems, and memory loss.

Are Alzheimer’s And Dementia The Same?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but in a technical and true sense, dementia and Alzheimer’s aren’t identical. Dementia isn’t actually a particular disease, but just a more general term that can be used to describe declines in brain functions when issues with visual perception, judgment, focus, language and memory are substantial enough to mess up daily functions. Dementia happens in multiple kinds, and Alzheimer’s disease is the most frequent occurrence. Per data from the Alzheimer’s Association, the disease accounts for anywhere from 60 up to 80 percent of all cases of dementia.

Other kinds of dementia include the following:

The frontotemporal disorder is also known as frontotemporal dementia, which is the consequence of nerve-cell damage to the frontal and temporal lobes in the front and sides of the brain.

Lewy body dementia is a disease which is marked by abnormal protein clumps known as Lewy bodies developing in the brain cells.

Vascular dementia impedes the flow of vital nutrients like oxygen to the brain cells after blood vessels get blocked or damaged.

Mixed dementia is when people experience more than one kind of dementia simultaneously. It’s estimated that half of the elderly dementia sufferers are afflicted with this. The most common combination is Alzheimer’s disease with vascular dementia.

Statistics Regarding Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer’s dementia isn’t something that’s a typical part of the aging process. However, the most frequent form, known as late-onset Alzheimer’s, typically impacts those 60 and up, per the CDC. The CDC also says that the numbers of those with Alzheimer’s dementia go up by double for every five years past the age of 65. Estimates suggest that 5.7 million Americans have Alzheimer’s dementia, and 5.5 million of them are 65 or older. 81 percent of those with Alzheimer’s dementia have hit the age of 75 or older. As the group of older Americans rises in numbers, given the aging baby boomer generation and thanks to medical advances, the number of individuals afflicted with Alzheimer’s is likely to go up. It’s thought that by 2050, there will be nearly 14 million citizens of the age 65 and up with Alzheimer’s dementia, with a million fresh cases annually unless there are substantial medical breakthroughs. Since fewer individuals are dying from things like cancer and heart disease, the fatality rates of Alzheimer’s will continue to rise. Per the CDC data, Alzheimer’s disease is already the number six cause of death across America, and fifth for those 65 and up.

Is Alzheimer’s Hereditary?

The specific genes that you inherit from your parents and ancestors do seem to have some role in the development of this disease, but, with rare exceptions, those genes don’t absolutely mean you will or won’t get it. The early-onset version of Alzheimer’s disease is not a common type. It develops previous to the age of 65, and it’s sometimes the result of gene defects or mutations which get passed straight from a parent to a child. Alzheimer’s that is the result of genetic mutations typically accounts for 7 to 12 percent of all the instances of early-onset disease. They also account for less than a single percentage point of all the total Alzheimer’s cases. However, someone with one such mutation could certainly wind up developing Alzheimer’s. For most everyone else, there is a gene variant known as APOE-e4 which increases their odds of developing Alzheimer’s. This is why those who currently have a first-degree relative, like a sibling or parent, with Alzheimer’s is at a bigger risk than those who do not. Still, not everyone with an APOE-e4 gene is going to develop Alzheimer’s. Scientists do believe that environmental and lifestyle factors also matter. As such, they are actively investigating various modifiable factors in order decrease the risk of Alzheimer’s.

Risk Factors And Causes For Alzheimer’s

What are the causes behind Alzheimer’s disease? That’s the focus of a billion dollars of research into dementia. Scientists have certainly made strides in learning what goes on inside the brain as this disease progresses, yet the just don’t know what instigates the changes. There is one incontrovertible fact, and that is Alzheimer’s disease isn’t a typical part of the aging process. Many folks get to their 90th birthday with cognitive abilities fully intact. The risk of Alzheimer’s can go up thanks to genetics. Researchers have pinpointed more than 20 genes that look like they boost the odds, but only one seems to have a substantial impact. Even that one gene, the previously mentioned APOE-e4 isn’t all that powerful. Factors like environment and lifestyle could play a crucial role too. Researchers are striving to analyze all the various influences, with the hopes that their findings can point the way to interventions that will stop Alzheimer’s disease before things even begin.

Besides genetics and age, there are possible risk factors related to Alzheimer’s which include the following:

Diabetes

Heart disease

High blood pressure

High cholesterol

Midlife obesity

Stroke

Should you have a loved one that needs the proper attention, or have any questions about care, we at Assisting Hands are here to help; call or contact us immediately to help your loved ones today.

Part One Of Caring For Alzheimer’s Disease; An Irreversible Brain Disorder – Senior Care Houston Alzheimer’s disease is something that can develop when the neurons or nerve cells of the brain stop functioning, start losing their connections to one another, and then eventually start dying.
