Maintaining Independence and Dignity for Seniors

December 9, 2022Assisting Hands Home Care

As adults, we value our independence above almost everything else. After all, we fought for the first 18 years of our life for our independence. After making our own decisions for more than 50 or 60 years, it’s hard to give that up.

As an adult child of aging parents, we want to help them, but we also want to respect them. The balance between preserving their independence and dignity while helping them and keeping them safe is a delicate balancing act.

Here are some tips that can help you.

Housekeeping: Let them do as much as they can. They might not be able to carry the laundry, but they can sit in their chair and fold it. You can then put it away.

Mom can dust the end tables while sitting on the couch or chair. Let her do this while you vacuum.

Dad can’t change a light bulb anymore, but he can assist you. You climb the step stool and hand him the burned-out bulb, he can hand you the new one to install. He feels useful and is not put in danger of climbing a ladder.

Mom can’t stand at the sink to do dishes, but she wants to help. Have her sit in a chair near the dishwasher. You rinse the dishes and hand them over to her. She can place them in the dishwasher. If you don’t use a dishwasher, it may be possible for her to dry some of the dishes with a towel to be put away. Others may need to air dry on a drainer.

Cooking: Mom can help cut up vegetables or meat while sitting at the table. You can stand at the stove and do the cooking. She can offer suggestions on how to cook and season the food. This is a great way for you to learn to cook your favorite ‘mom’ dishes.

Shopping: Let them be active in making the shopping list and meal planning. If they are able, let them go to the store with you. If the store you shop at has motorized carts it makes it easy for them be part of the shopping and let them pay for their own purchases at the register.

Bathing: Bathing is very personal. Many adult children are not comfortable assisting their parents with a shower. When their safety in the shower is in question, don’t take the risk of a fall. Our trained caregiving staff can help.
