Pickleball! Don’t Knock It Till You Try It.

I admit it: I’m addicted to pickleball!! I’ve now been playing for about 2 years and can personally attest to not only the physical benefits but the social connections and friendships I’ve found playing! And pickleball can be played at any age – I’ve seen more than a few player in their 80’s who can more than hold their own on a pickleball court!

But did you know pickleball is a great activity for brain health as well? Below I talk about a few of the brain health benefits one can get from playing pickleball.

Improves Cognitive Function

Pickleball requires quick reflexes, sharp focus, and strategic thinking. Playing the sport regularly can improve cognitive function, including attention, memory, and decision-making skills. Pickleball players must make split-second decisions and react to fast-moving objects, which can stimulate the brain and improve cognitive abilities.

Reduces Stress and Anxiety

Exercise is known to reduce stress and anxiety levels, and pickleball is no exception. Physical activity triggers the release of endorphins, which are neurotransmitters that promote feelings of well-being and happiness. In addition, playing pickleball in a social setting can provide a sense of community and social support, which can also help to reduce stress and anxiety and is widely viewed as an effective tool in the toolbox to help prevent or slow the progression of dementia.

Boosts Mood

In addition to reducing stress and anxiety, playing pickleball can also boost mood. Exercise has been shown to increase the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that regulates mood. Playing pickleball with friends can also provide a sense of camaraderie and fun, which can boost mood and overall well-being.

Increases brain plasticity

Brain plasticity refers to the brain’s ability to change and adapt to new experiences. Playing pickleball requires the brain to constantly adapt to new situations, which can increase brain plasticity. This can improve cognitive function and help to prevent age-related cognitive decline.

Playing pickleball is not only a fun and exciting way to stay active, but it can also provide a number of benefits for brain health. From improving cognitive function to reducing stress and anxiety, pickleball can help to keep your brain healthy and sharp. If you haven’t already, give it a try! I look forward to seeing you on the pickleball court!
