Psoriasis in Senior Care

August 20, 2026jclayton

Psoriasis is a common chronic skin condition that can affect people of all ages, including older adults receiving care at home. It causes the skin to become dry, inflamed, and covered with patches or scales. While psoriasis is not contagious, it can be uncomfortable and may affect a senior’s confidence, sleep, and overall quality of life.

For seniors in homecare, proper skin care is an important part of managing psoriasis. Caregivers can help by keeping the skin moisturized with products recommended by the individual’s healthcare provider. Gentle, fragrance-free soaps and lukewarm water may help prevent additional irritation. Scratching should be discouraged because damaged skin can become painful or infected.

Homecare providers should also observe changes in the skin and report concerns to the senior’s healthcare professional. New or worsening redness, swelling, drainage, significant pain, or signs of infection should receive prompt medical attention. Caregivers should follow prescribed treatments carefully and avoid introducing new creams or remedies without professional guidance.

Psoriasis can sometimes be associated with other health concerns, including joint pain. Seniors may need extra support with mobility, dressing, bathing, and other daily activities when symptoms become uncomfortable.

Most importantly, seniors with psoriasis deserve compassionate and respectful care. Taking time to listen to their concerns, maintain their privacy, and support their treatment routine can make homecare more comfortable. With consistent skin care, medical guidance, and attentive caregiving, seniors living with psoriasis can maintain healthier skin and a better quality of life at home.
