Fall Prevention Tips for Seniors: Staying Safe at Home

Each year, millions of older adults experience falls that can lead to serious injuries and hospital visits. In fact, the CDC reports that one in four adults over 65 falls each year, making fall prevention one of the most important steps families can take to keep loved ones safe.

The good news? With a few simple changes, seniors can reduce their risk and enjoy greater confidence at home.

1. Keep Walkways Clear

Clutter, loose rugs, and cords are common tripping hazards. Make sure hallways and living areas have a clear path, especially in high-traffic spaces.

2. Improve Lighting

Many falls happen in dimly lit rooms or stairways. Add night lights in bedrooms, bathrooms, and hallways to make moving around at night safer.

3. Install Safety Features

Grab bars in the bathroom, non-slip mats in the shower, and railings on both sides of staircases can make a big difference in preventing falls.

4. Encourage Regular Exercise

Strength and balance exercises, such as gentle stretching, tai chi, or walking, help seniors stay steady on their feet.

5. Review Medications

Some prescriptions can cause dizziness or drowsiness. A doctor or pharmacist can check if medications may increase fall risk.

6. Get a Helping Hand

One of the best ways to reduce fall risks is having an extra set of eyes and hands at home. A caregiver can help with mobility, keep walkways safe, assist with bathing, and make sure daily routines are easier and safer.

At Assisting Hands Home Care Chattanooga, we understand how important safety is for aging loved ones. Our caregivers are trained to spot risks, provide steady support, and offer peace of mind for families.
