Best Traditional Ice Cream Recipe (With or Without a Machine)

Intro:
There’s nothing like a bowl of creamy, homemade vanilla ice cream on a hot summer day. This traditional recipe is easy to make, full of rich flavor, and perfect for sharing with loved ones. Whether you have an ice cream maker or not, this recipe works both ways—making it ideal for caregivers looking to treat seniors at home with something special.

Classic Vanilla Ice Cream Recipe (Machine Method)

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups heavy cream

  • 1 cup whole milk

  • ¾ cup granulated sugar

  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract (optional for Chocolate: substitute with ½ cup chocolate syrup or ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder + 2 tbsp extra sugar)

  • Pinch of salt

Instructions (With Ice Cream Machine):

  1. Whisk together cream, milk, sugar, vanilla (or chocolate version), and salt until sugar dissolves.

  2. Pour into your ice cream maker and churn—usually 20–25 minutes—for soft-serve consistency.

  3. Transfer to a container and freeze 2–4 hours for a firmer texture.

No Machine? No Problem: Ice Cream in a Bag

Ingredients (Single Serving):

  • 1 cup half‑and‑half or whole milk

  • 2 tablespoons sugar

  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional for Chocolate: use 1 tablespoon chocolate syrup)

  • Ice

  • ⅓ cup kosher or rock salt

  • 1 quart‑size zip-top bag

  • 1 gallon‑size zip-top bag

Instructions:

  1. Combine milk, sugar, and vanilla (or chocolate syrup) in the small bag; seal well.

  2. Fill the large bag halfway with ice, add salt, and place the small bag inside; seal securely.

  3. Shake for 5–10 minutes—use gloves or a towel to protect hands.

  4. Remove the small bag, rinse off salt, and serve right away.

Tips to Spruce It Up

  • Toppings bar: chocolate or caramel syrup, sprinkles, crushed cookies, marshmallows

  • Fresh fruit: strawberries, bananas, blueberries, or peaches

  • Classic sides: serve with warm pie, pound cake, or in a waffle cone

  • Fun add‑ins: stir in mini chocolate chips, chopped nuts, or candy pieces before freezing
