Some Moments That Matter are quiet, deeply personal blessings that happen far from the spotlight. This Thanksgiving, one of those moments happened in a cozy living room right here in our community, when a Veteran was able to come home from George H. Wahlen Veterans Home and spend the holiday surrounded by his family.
This Veteran served our country in Vietnam and lost the use of his legs as a result of his service. He can no longer walk or stand, but his courage, dignity, and love for his family remain as strong as ever.
Tim was honored to be there to help make it possible for him to come home.
A Family’s Wish for Thanksgiving
In the weeks leading up to the holiday, this Veteran’s wife, Cherrie, had a simple but powerful hope:
She wanted her husband home.
Even just for a couple of days. Even just for the holiday. She wanted him out of the care center, sitting in his favorite chair, hearing the familiar sounds of family in the kitchen and laughter in the background—everything that makes Thanksgiving feel like Thanksgiving.
But she was also worried.
How would she safely help him in and out of his bed?
What about mobility, transfers, and personal care while he was home?
What if he needed more help than she could safely provide?
Those fears are real, and they can be overwhelming. No family should have to choose between safety and special moments together.
Tim (and Lisa) Step In to Help
Tim, our in-house VA advocate and co-owner of Assisting Hands Home Care, didn’t hesitate when he learned what this family needed. As a Veteran himself, he understands how important it is to honor those who have served—not just with words, but with actions.
Over Thanksgiving, Tim and Lisa came to the home to provide hands-on care and support so that this Veteran could safely spend two full days where he truly wanted to be: at home with his wife and family.
They helped with:
- Safe transfers and mobility
- Showering and personal care
- Ongoing support so Cherrie could relax and enjoy her time with him
Because Tim and Lisa were there to handle the care needs, Cherrie didn’t have to spend the holiday worrying about every movement or every “what if.” She could focus on what mattered most—sharing time, conversation, and gratitude with her husband.
A Spouse’s Thank-You
After the holiday, Cherrie sent a beautiful message of thanks. With her permission, we’re honored to share her words in this Moments That Matter story:
“I would love to share a few words about Tim Brown and Lisa Brown with Assisted Hands and all the kind things they did to come and help me and my husband for Thanksgiving these last few days. He is currently a resident at George H. Wahlen Veterans home in Ogden and he was able to come home for two days for the holiday! He can’t walk or stand up due to the service he gave in Vietnam and I needed some caregiving help for him at our house.
Tim and Lisa came to my rescue and helped me so much getting him in the shower and taking care of him and his needs, they were so awesome and so kind and sweet and professional in serving him and I would highly recommend anyone who wants professionals in care giving to call them… you won’t be disappointed!!! Thank you.
Cherrie 🍒”
Her words mean more to us than any advertisement ever could. They’re a reminder that what we do is not just about tasks and schedules—it’s about real families, real love, and real relief.
Why These Moments Matter So Much
At Assisting Hands Home Care, we talk a lot about helping seniors “age in place,” but sometimes the most meaningful moments are these in-between times:
- Coming home from a care center for a holiday
- Attending a family event with extra support
- Making it possible for a spouse to be family again, not just a full-time caregiver, even if just for a couple of days
For Veterans and their families, those moments can be especially powerful. Many have given so much in service to our country. Helping them reclaim special days at home is one small way we can give back.
Our Commitment to Veterans and Their Families
As a Veteran-owned agency, we are deeply committed to serving those who have served:
- Tim acts as our VA advocate, helping Veterans and their families navigate the VA healthcare system and understand their home care benefits.
- We work closely with local VA providers and care centers, including George H. Wahlen Veterans Home, to coordinate safe, supportive transitions and home visits.
- Our caregivers are trained to support complex care needs, including mobility challenges, personal care, and end-of-life support, while honoring each Veteran’s dignity and preferences.
Whether it’s short-term help over a holiday, ongoing support at home, or guidance in understanding VA benefits, we are here to walk beside families every step of the way.
Closing Thoughts
This Thanksgiving homecoming was a beautiful reminder of why we do what we do. One Veteran, one devoted spouse, one home filled with love—and one team willing to spend the holiday making sure it all happened safely.
These are the Moments That Matter.
If you have a Veteran or loved one in a care center or living at home who needs extra support to enjoy family time, holidays, or everyday routines, we would be honored to help you explore your options and see what’s possible.
