Our Salt Lake County is working hard to ensure that the seniors in our community stay healthy and age in their homes with the resources that they need (hum, seems familiar to our own mission at Assisting Hands….). Families and seniors, do not overlook these resources!
Case in point, with a few interesting statistics. For the year 2025,
- The county served 363,785 Home-Delivered Meals for 2,689 seniors
- The county provided 39,867 Rides for 1,352 seniors, including 7,175 wheelchair rides.
These services are very useful for the seniors in our community of Murray, Taylorsville, Cottonwood Heights, Kears, Holladay, West Valley City, and Millcreek, among the main cities in the county.
In this blog, we will dive in more on the resources that Salt Lake County offers, especially 3 of their successful programs and gems for our community: Meals on Wheels, Rides for Wellness, and Health promotion programs, and how you, too, could benefit from these invaluable services.
Gem #1: Meals on Wheels
Meals on Wheels does not need any introduction! Who has not heard about Meals on Wheels, designed to support a nationwide network of local providers helping seniors remain healthy, connected, and living at home (hum, that’s similar to our mission!)?
It is a highly successful program that is funded by a public-private partnership with some Federal funding, some local funding, as well as philanthropic donations, and client contributions, and it is managed by our county.

Let’s answer some of your burning questions:
What are the eligibility requirements for receiving these meals?
You must be:
- 60 years of age or older
- Homebound
- A resident of Salt Lake County
- Unable to prepare your own meals
- Without family or other resources to help with meal preparation
How many meals will I receive?
Based on your income, the county will determine how many meals a week you are eligible for. Meals are delivered 5 days a week (Monday through Friday), with some of our seniors eligible to receive weekend meals as well.
What kind of meals will I be receiving?
- All meals are low-sodium, low-calorie, and low-fat.
- Special diets (cut meat, pureed, no nuts, no pork, and no seafood) are available.
- Check out the full menu here.
Do I have to pay for my meals?
The cost of each meal is $3.50. You are not obligated to donate for your meal, but you may contribute at any level you feel comfortable with.
How do I get started?
Just give a call to Salt Lake County at 385-468-3200. They’ll take it from there.
Gem #2: Rides for Wellness, aka Transportation to vital Medical Appointments
Another service that is often overlooked is the rides for wellness.
Let’s answer your burning questions below:
What types of rides and for whom?
These are transportation services to vital medical appointments such as dialysis, chemotherapy, and physical therapy for adults aged 60 and older with no other means of transportation to these.
Can I be in a wheelchair?
Yes. The vans are wheelchair accessible vans to accommodate various mobility needs.
What days and times are the rides?
Monday to Friday, between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
How much ahead should I schedule these rides?
The county recommends that you schedule your ride 2 weeks in advance. Call (385) 468-3200 for new client enrollment.
Does it cost me anything?
No, but your donation is appreciated. All that’s suggested is a modest $3.00 donation for each trip, but it is not required.
