Elderly Care in St. Petersburg FLIf your parent has suffered a recent physical decline due to an injury or an accident, you may feel overwhelmed with the prospect of keeping them safe at home. While this may be new terrain for you, there are countless individuals that have trekked down this same path. Knowing what works, and what doesn’t, can help you chart a successful course for you and yours as the healing process takes place.

Mobility Aids

There are several mobility aids that can help your parent feel steady and secure as they navigate through the house during the initial stages of healing. Walkers are often recommended over canes due to their ability to support more of your parent’s body weight without them leaning to one side more than the other. It can take a little time to get use to one. You will want to ensure they are measured right for height. If uncertain, check with their doctor who may refer your parent to a physical or occupational therapist.

Transfer boards and discs can help you slide your parent from one seat to another, off the bed, or into the shower. Swivel seat cushions for the car can help them get in and out of the passenger seat. Risers for the toilet and other chairs can make bending down to sit much easier. Reachers are tools that make reaching into cupboards and other hard to get to places easier to navigate without risking a fall.

Creating a Safe Home

Their home will most likely need a once over. You will need to be aware of the increase in space they will need if they are now using a walker. Be sure to remove throw rugs that could cause a slipping hazard. Any obstacles or impediments will need to be removed. This would include wires that cross paths, furniture that juts out, and clutter of any sort. Check the lighting. Now may be a good time to install sensor lighting that comes on with movement.

Consider installing grab bars in the shower and by the toilet. Move items in cupboards and in the refrigerator so that they are easy to access.

Consider the services of an elderly care provider to assist your parent during their initial healing stage. They can help with the daily activities of living such as bathing and dressing as well as go grocery shopping, prepare meals and perform light housekeeping. They can help your parent navigate through the house, ensuring someone is there for them should any misstep occur.
