What Does Caring for Yourself Mean as a Caregiver?

July 10, 2018Becky MoultrieCaregivers in Pinellas Park FL, Caring for the Caregiver

Caregivers often start to stumble when they try to figure out what it means to take care of themselves. It’s such a foreign concept because it feels as if it’s wrong to shift your focus, but if you don’t, you’re not going to be able to continue to be a caregiver for long.

Your Physical Health

Being a caregiver is extremely demanding on a physical level. This is true even if you aren’t physically lifting your elderly family member and helping her to maneuver. The very fact that you’re busy constantly is physically exhausting and it means that you need to be eating healthy meals regularly, exercising, and getting enough sleep. if you’re not doing those things, you’re going to be more run down than you should be.

Your Emotional Health

Your emotional health is just as important as your physical health as a family caregiver. It’s troubling to see your senior struggling with certain issues and no matter how much you’re helping, you likely always wish you could do more. If you’re not dealing with the emotional aspects of caregiving, those emotions are going to bubble up anyway. Find friends, support groups, and even counselors you can talk with who can help you through the emotional aspects of being a caregiver.

Making it All Work

Caregiving is just one facet of who you are and what you do. There’s a lot more to being you and it all has to work together. You might be an employee, an employer, a parent, and a spouse. It’s crucial that you figure out how to combine all of these different roles in a way that allows you to be the best you can be in all of those different categories.

Taking Time Away

Every role in your life is one that you need to take a break from now and again. That’s just a reality. Somehow, though, when you apply that to caregiving, it feels extra selfish to take that time. Find ways to make sure that your elderly family member is in good hands and take that time for you. When you come back, you’ll be that much more ready to take on the next challenge than you would have been had you not given yourself a break.

Remember that you’re an entire person in your own right as a caregiver. It’s vital that you’re keeping that in mind when it comes to taking care of yourself. If you don’t do that, you’re more likely to have issues with stress and exhaustion than you should.
