Common Emotional Issues Following a Fall

August 13, 2021Becky MoultrieBlog Posts, Fall Prevention, Senior Safety

Many people only think about the physical effects that occur after an elderly person falls. Do they have a hip or back injury? Did they get a concussion from hitting their head? While these physical effects are important to think about, it is also important to think about the emotional issues following a fall. Many senior citizens struggle with emotional problems after they have a fall. As a family caregiver, it is important to learn more about these issues and how senior home care can help.

Depression and Anxiety

Two of the most common emotional issues after an elderly person falls are depression and anxiety.

Many senior citizens fall into a depression after a fall because they feel they are losing their independence. Others might feel depressed because they got injured and need to rely so much on their family members. If that is the case for your elderly loved one, let them know you can get senior home care providers to take care of them. This way, they don’t have to feel so bad about getting help.

Some senior citizens experience anxiety after a fall. The primary reason for this is because they are worried they will fall again. Unfortunately, this anxiety can commonly lead to another fall because the person is unsteady on their feet.

Lack of Motivation and Decreased Confidence

Your elderly loved one may experience a lack of motivation and decreased confidence after a fall, too.

The lack of motivation often stems from not feeling like they should do anything. If they just sit there, they can prevent another fall, right? That is what goes through many elderly people’s minds after they fall.

The decreased confidence stems from the first fall. Your elderly loved one might not believe they can walk well on their own. They may worry that they will fall again. The lack of confidence is similar to anxiety. Unfortunately, it can make your elderly loved one more unsteady on their feet, which increases the chances of having another fall.

How Senior Home Care Can Help

These are some of the most common emotional issues following a fall. If your elderly loved one has fallen already, make sure to talk to them about safety measures they can take to prevent another fall. Let them know how installing railings, improving lighting in their home, hiring senior home care providers, and taking other measures can help them stay safer. Hopefully, having these discussions can help your elderly loved one to feel better after their fall.
