Housecleaning is not on everyone’s top list of fun things to do. When you’re having to clean more than one home because you’re helping your parent age in place, it can be quite daunting. But as with most tasks, if you break it down and prioritize (and get help from senior home care) you may find it’s not too overwhelming.
If your parent is still living in her home but needs some help keeping her kitchen clean and orderly, here are a few ways to help. When you can’t be there to help, senior home care can step in a help your parent maintain a clean house, including the kitchen.
- Prioritize. While a spotless kitchen that shines with sparkly appliances is beautiful, if you’re finding that goal a bit too overwhelming, it’s time to make a list of what’s important and what can wait. This is a great time to talk to your parent as well about what she feels is most important. You may think cleaning the oven is the most important task, but maybe your parent wants you to reorganize her shelves because she can no longer reach the items that are high up.
- Keep safety in mind. Kitchens are notorious for bacteria and sometimes bugs and other pests. Keep the tasks that keep those issues at bay near the top of your list.

Schedule it. For many tasks, it can help to set a time and time limits. In other words, you can actually make it an “appointment” on your calendar that you will work on cleaning your parent’s kitchen from 9am-11am next Saturday. When 11am comes around, you’re done. If you haven’t finished it all, then you make a new appointment to continue your work later. This will keep a “simple” task from becoming an all-day task and will give you and your parent some incentive to focus on the task at hand when you’re doing it.
- Recruit help. Remember, you don’t have to do it alone. Sure, the kids probably don’t want to hear “who wants to go to grandma’s house to clean this weekend?” but you might be surprised about family or friends who would be willing to come over and help with a specific chore. Some people love the idea of cleaning out a fridge or organizing a cupboard. Bring them along. You might also consider hiring senior home care who can help in the in-between times so that your weekend cleaning isn’t so overwhelming. A senior care provider can help your parent with daily dishes, wiping down counters, and even cleaning out expired food from the fridge.
- Just do it. It’s easy to procrastinate but cleaning especially just mounts up and gets more overwhelming the longer you put it off. Taking care of it consistently will make the task much easier.
Once you’ve got this kitchen cleaning thing down, work in other areas of your parent’s home so that cleaning is not overwhelming and doesn’t distract you from your own household chores, and spending time with those you love.
