During the coronavirus pandemic there are steps your senior can take to help to reduce the risk of exposing herself to these germs. These steps are a lot simpler than they seem and they’re highly effective.
Avoid Being Around People Who Are Sick
If there are people in your senior’s life that you know are sick, make sure that your senior is able to keep far away from them. This is good practice at any time, but it’s especially important now during the coronavirus pandemic. Likewise, if your elderly family member feels as if she is sick, even with just a cold, she should avoid being around other people.
Cover Coughs and Sneezes
It’s always a good idea to cover coughs and sneezes, because coughs and sneezes are part of how germs are spread. Sneezes and coughs, and the microparticles within those fluids, can cover a lot more ground than you and your senior might expect. The more people cover when they’re coughing or sneezing, the more that those particles are kept close to the person that emitted them.
Clean High Use Surfaces Often
Any surfaces that are used often, like doorknobs, light switches, and countertops, come in contact with a lot of germs. When you clean those surfaces often, though, you’re doing a lot more to keep those germs from coming in contact with someone who doesn’t need to be exposed to them. Simple cleaning products work just fine.
Disinfect Surfaces, Too
What’s really important after cleaning, especially for high use surfaces, is to disinfect those surfaces. Using an is important, because that means that you’re doing as much as possible to kill any coronavirus germs that may have gotten into your senior’s home.
Use Proper Hand Washing Techniques
Hand washing is one of the most effective preventative measures your senior can take right now. She doesn’t have to use anything fancy. Plain soap and any temperature water are fine. She does need to wash her hands continuously for twenty seconds or longer for the greatest impact. If she’s in a place where she can’t wash her hands yet, hand sanitizer can help. It must contain at least sixty percent alcohol to be completely effective.
If your senior lives alone, this might be a lot for her to keep up with on her own. Senior care providers can handle a variety of these tasks, particularly the ones related to cleaning and disinfecting, so that your senior is as safe as possible.
