Tips for Increasing the Success of a Hip Replacement Surgery

October 23, 2020Becky MoultrieBlog Posts, Elderly Care in Pinellas Park FL, Hip Replacement Surgery and Recovery

Is your elderly loved one scheduled to get a hip replacement surgery? If so, you might be worried about how to help them recover better. There are many recommendations and orders that their doctor might have. However, there are also some tips here that can help you and elderly care providers to increase the success of your elderly loved one’s hip replacement surgery.

Getting Rid of Tripping Hazards

It is very common for elderly people to fall after a hip replacement surgery. This is because they often shuffle their feet, since they can’t move very well. If you want to help prevent your loved one from falling, you should get rid of all the tripping hazards that you can find in their home. You should take out floor mats, rugs, and other things that your loved one might trip over.

Upgrade Their Bathroom

Another way that you can help to increase the success of your elderly loved one’s hip replacement surgery is to upgrade their bathroom. You should make sure the toilet is at a height where your loved one doesn’t have to bend down to far. They should also be able to get up easily, as well. Installing a grab bar near the toilet can be beneficial for your elderly loved one. You should also ensure that there are grab bars in the shower and bath area. If possible, you can put a shower chair in the tub/shower area. This prevents your elderly loved one from having to stand up for too long.

Raising Up Their Legs

You and the elderly care providers should encourage your loved one to raise up their legs. If they don’t elevate their legs enough, there will likely be more swelling. This can make it more difficult for your elderly loved one to move around. It can also make it more difficult for your loved one to heal.

Conclusion

If your elderly loved one is scheduled to have a hip replacement surgery, you should do all that you can to help them make it successful. While they aren’t in control of what happens during the surgery, there are so many things that you and elderly care providers can do to help make the recovery more successful. If you follow the tips that are mentioned above, your elderly loved one can feel better throughout their recovery process. For some elderly people, a hip replacement surgery can be extremely tough.
