The amount of devices and gadgets that are available for older adults today is mind boggling, but so many of them are incredibly helpful. These examples might be just the thing for your senior.
Remote Alarms for Visitors
Today’s doorbell cameras can route video and audio directly to your senior’s tablet or smartphone so that she can see who is at the door without even getting up. This can be a huge benefit in terms of both safety and comfort. Your elderly family member can set the notifications to a volume that works for her or even to vibrate, which is especially helpful if she has hearing trouble.
Wearable Medical Alerts
Medical alerts have come a long way from when they first came out. They’re much more comfortable to wear now and many of them come with a lot of features beyond just calling for help in an emergency. Some smartwatches are fitness trackers but also have the ability to take your senior’s blood pressure or detect a fall. That can be invaluable in terms of her overall safety.
Mops and Vacuums That Run Themselves
Robotic vacuums and mops are a great help around the house. This is a great way for your senior to have the clean floors that she wants without having to tackle that task herself. And even if she has help from you and from senior care providers, this is a way for her to have the cleanliness she wants on the timetable she wants. The newest models are programmable via an app.
Devices and Controllers with Large Buttons
If your senior has had some new difficulty with some of her controls, like remotes or her landline phone, then getting one with fewer, larger buttons could be a good idea. A remote with limited options can be especially helpful for aging adults who have dementia or other cognitive difficulties. This can help her to watch what she wants without changing functions on the television that interfere with her ability to watch anything at all.
Anti-scalding Devices
One problem that too many aging adults face is scalding in the bath. This is especially problematic for aging adults with cognitive difficulties, because they may forget to turn the cold water on with the hot if the taps are separated. Anti-scalding devices fit to the tub and help to avoid that issue. You can also lower the temperature on your senior’s water heater to help prevent scalding.
Explore some of the different technologies available for your senior. No matter what she’s experiencing, there’s likely a tool or device that can make her life easier.
