If you haven’t already, you might want to start planning how to talk to your elderly family member about avoiding a fall. Proper planning can help you to hit all the important points.
Definitely Set Some Time Aside for a Real Conversation
This isn’t a talk that you want to have randomly in between episodes of your senior’s favorite show. This is an important conversation and one for which you need to have your senior’s full attention. Set aside a specific time for you both to sit down and talk when you’ll be uninterrupted. It’s important to be able to convey to your senior how urgent this information is for her.
Include Concrete Facts and Answers
Prepare in advance for this talk, too. You want to make sure that you bring concrete facts and some possible answers with you. That’s always a solid way to approach any potential difficulty, in fact. When you’re as educated as you can be about falls and fall risks, that gives you the information you need to talk to your elderly family member.
Small changes can yield big results. You might want to make sure she understands the need for handrails throughout the house, for instance, or how using her cane at home can prevent a fall.
There Needs to Be Give and Take
This doesn’t need to be a lecture, because that is probably going to cause your senior to tune out. Make it a true conversation with her. Ask her what her concerns are around falling and reassure her that you’re willing to look into whatever she might find to be a possible risk for falling. You might be surprised what she brings up, especially if you haven’t already considered that.
This Isn’t about Creating Fear
You want to approach this seriously and with the importance that the topic demands, but you aren’t trying to scare your senior into cooperating with your plans, either. Fear can be a contributing factor to falls, too, and that’s one that you want to avoid. The idea is to be knowledgeable and to prepare for potential issues before they become problems.
Conversations like this one can help you and your elderly family member to realize that help from other sources might be a good idea. Senior care providers can assist with mobility and help you to spot potential fall risks so that you can put solutions in place.
