Tips to Help Senior Citizens Prevent UTIs

January 21, 2022Becky MoultrieBlog Posts, Chronic Conditions, Seniors & Health Issues, Seniors and Health Issues

Is your elderly loved one constantly getting UTIs? If they are even getting more than one a year that is too many. The first thing you should do if they have a UTI is to schedule them an appointment with their doctor. If you can’t get them there, you can have a companion care at home provider drive them. Medications may need to be prescribed to treat the UTI. There are some tips that can help senior citizens to prevent UTIs, as well. You should encourage your elderly loved one to follow through with these tips.

Increasing Fluids

One of the best ways to prevent UTIs is to increase fluids. You should ask your elderly loved one how much water they are drinking a day. If they aren’t drinking at least 6 – 8 ounce glasses of water every day, you or a home care provider should help them set up a goal to do this. If your elderly loved one can drink 6-8 glasses of water daily, it can significantly help lower their risk of getting a UTI. To make it easier for them to drink this much water, it would be a good idea to leave bottles of water in various areas of their home.

Going to the Bathroom Often

Another tip that can help to prevent UTIs is for your elderly loved one to go to the bathroom often. Senior citizens often need to urinate every 2-3 hours. Some elderly people even need to get up at nighttime to urinate. By emptying the bladder often, bacteria can stay out of the urinary tract, lowering the risk of getting a UTI.

Proper Hygiene

In order for your elderly loved one to prevent a UTI, they should also practice proper hygiene. Some of the best ways for them to do this include:

  • Taking regular baths or showers
  • Not getting soap into their urinary tract
  • Getting help with bathing (if they aren’t capable of doing it themselves)

By practicing and committing to proper hygiene, there is less of a chance for bacteria to get into the urinary tract. If your elderly loved one can’t properly take care of their personal hygiene in these manners, you may want to hire elderly care providers who can help them out with this.

Conclusion

There are many senior citizens who get multiple UTIs every year. If your elderly loved one is getting regular UTIs or if you just want to help prevent them from getting these, help them to follow the tips noted above. If you need some assistance to ensure your elderly loved one is following these tips, you can hire companion care at home providers to help, as well.
