How to Stay Connected with Senior Parents During Summer Vacation

How to Stay Connected with Senior Parents During Summer Vacation

July 28, 2025Assisting Hands

Summer vacations are ideal for spending meaningful time together. Seniors who’ve fished and hiked as youths may still wish to engage in these enjoyable pursuits. Families are encouraged to stay connected with their elderly parents, especially as the sun shines and the temps are pleasant.

The physical health of aging individuals undergoes changes over time. From reduced mobility to an increase in health risks, physical challenges can interfere with a senior’s ability to pursue the activities in which they once participated. But with the help of family, they don’t have to give them up.

Elderly parents can still visit the beach or hike the woods, albeit with slight modifications and the supervision or companionship of loved ones. Not only do seniors have the chance to live to the fullest as they age but they remain connected with those whom they appreciate most.

Spending time in nature rejuvenates a senior’s mind and body. The warm sunshine and the fresh air boost both physical and mental health. Families should consider outdoor activities with senior parents during summer vacations to double the benefits of their time together.

1. Hold an Outdoor Picnic

A picnic in the park offers twice the enjoyment, as seniors have opportunities to relish a meal with family but also spend invaluable time in nature. Summertime favorites include berries, barbecue, and refreshing beverages. Involve the parents by asking them to choose the tasty spread.

Consider whom to invite to the picnic. An elderly parent who’s made friends in the neighborhood may want to bring them along. Or invite the grandchildren and other relatives for an afternoon of family bonding. Alternatively, families might elect one-on-one time with their beloved parents.

2. Visit a Farmer’s Market

The tantalizing baked goods and farm-fresh vegetables are irresistible, and senior parents are sure to jump at a chance to visit the local farmer’s market. The older adult gets plenty of exercise walking from stall to stall, browsing the colorful array of fruits ready for sale.

Sampling honey or a muffin makes their day. Plus, the elderly parents have the opportunity to socialize, inquiring about the juicy, red apples or how the vendors made their hot-cross buns so delicious. A visit to a farmer’s market is an accessible way to stay connected during the summer.

3. Go Fishing

Dad may have tossed a line with the children growing up. As an older person, Dad can still visit the nearby lakes with his adult children and make a day out of fishing. Choose a spot and set up the poles, all the while chatting and reminiscing about bygone days.

Fishing in a quiet spot is a popular pastime and offers many health benefits, such as stress reduction. Since it involves repetitive actions, such as casting and reeling, fishing is known to help slow the cognitive decline associated with dementia in the elderly.

4. Take a Day Trip

Take a Day Trip

A day trip to a state park, such as Starved Rock, is alluring for seniors who are still able to hike short distances. Some trails are easier to walk than others, so choose one with benches that allow for rest. Pack food and water for the duration of the outing.

As mentioned, seniors need several breaks and hydration. Expect the aging parents to spend fewer hours outdoors. Even if the older adult does not have any medical concerns, it’s still advisable to bring medical supplies, a card that lists their doctor’s information, and a mobile phone.

5. Organize a Summer Book Club

Relaxing outdoors with a good book is a bookworm’s dream. If the senior loves a good story, this activity is not only accessible but strengthens ties with others. Pick a shaded spot outside and a book that family members and aging parents can read together.

Or consider inviting multiple bookworms and turning the event into a summer book club. Read each chapter, then take turns discussing the novel’s harrowing adventures or mysterious disappearances. Passionate discussions can make the day memorable and leave the seniors looking forward to more.

6. Watch an Outdoor Movie

Chicagoland residents have plenty of opportunities to spend meaningful time outdoors, fully entertained and engrossed. An outdoor movie held in Millennium Park is just one example of how senior parents can bond with the family. Wicked, The Grand Budapest Hotel and Pride and Prejudice are upcoming films.

The Millennium Park Summer Film Series is held on Tuesdays during the summer months. Take seats at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion or bring comfy chairs when lounging on the Great Lawn. Either way, bring snacks and drinks to munch on while being absorbed in the movie-going experience.

Staying connected with senior parents is easy to do, as Chicagoland offers plenty of green space and exciting venues to remain active and engaged. In between the bonding moments, compassionate in-home care from Assisting Hands Home Care can keep older adults healthy and safe.
