This April, Assisting Hands owner and Community Liaison had the opportunity to train the staff of Citadel Wilmette and Citadel Northbrook. Daniellah and Diane are Certified Dementia Live Coaches and are committed to bringing the memorable program to the community.
About Dementia Live
Dementia Live is an experiential program that allows participants to dive into the sensory world of someone who suffers from dementia and memory related diseases.
Participants wear special dark glasses that mimic loss of peripheral vision, gloves that limit fine motor skills, and headphones with distracting noises that make hearing and concentration a challenge. They are then asked to perform simple tasks such as buttoning and shirt, folding laundry, or counting coins.
The staff at Citadel commented that the experience of not being able to complete familiar tasks left them feeling ashamed, inadequate, and frustrated most of all. After the tasks are performed, the participants share their feelings and learn takeaways for caring for those with dementia.
This impactful experiential program develops compassion and understanding in the caregiving team. The program at the Citadel was geared toward staff at all levels, including social workers and nursing staff. We appreciate the invitation and dedication of their administration for ongoing training and support for their staff & residents!
