Call Us 770-626-5150

As of 2025, nearly 7.2 million Americans 65 years and older have Alzheimer’s disease—a number estimated to almost double by the year 2050. These degenerative illnesses increasingly impair memory, judgment, and the ability to manage day-to-day activities, typically leading to a requirement for full-time care.

For Cumming, GA families, having to take care of a loved one with dementia or Alzheimer’s can feel overwhelming. But studies have shown that seniors who experience memory loss fare better if they remain in the comfortable, familiar environment of their home. A familiar routine alleviates feelings of confusion, anxiety, and agitation, all common symptoms of these diseases.

That’s where we come in. At Assisting Hands Forsyth, we offer 24-hour non-medical in-home care that’s thoughtfully tailored to meet the unique needs of seniors living with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Our patient and compassionate caregivers are on hand to provide the support, patience, and understanding your loved one needs to stay safe and feel at ease—comfort of their own home in Cumming.

Common Symptoms, Early Warning Signs & Helpful Prevention Tips

Symptoms of Alzheimer’s and Dementia

Alzheimer’s and dementia affect each person differently, but here are some of the most common symptoms to watch for:

  • Memory loss that disrupts daily life (e.g., repeating questions, forgetting appointments)
  • Difficulty with familiar tasks (e.g., cooking, managing bills)
  • Confusion with time or place
  • Trouble finding words or following conversations
  • Poor judgment or decision-making
  • Personality or mood changes (e.g., withdrawal, depression, anxiety)

Prevention Tips for Alzheimer’s and Dementia

While there is no guaranteed way to prevent dementia, certain lifestyle habits may reduce the risk or slow progression:

  • Stay mentally active: Engage in puzzles, reading, games, or learning new skills
  • Maintain physical health: Regular exercise, healthy diet, and managing conditions like high blood pressure
  • Social interaction: Regular conversation, companionship, and participation in community events
  • Healthy sleep habits: Prioritize 7–8 hours of quality sleep each night
  • Limit alcohol and quit smoking
  • Manage stress and depression

Encouraging these habits early in life or during early stages of memory loss may offer protective benefits.

We used Assisting Hands of Forsyth and North Fulton to help care for my Father and I cannot say enough good things about the staff and management team. They were in our home 24 / 7 for a month and the care they provided was Five Star. They assisted with all the daily living tasks from bathing, dressing, and restroom needs as well as moving Dad from a hospital bed to a chair and assisted with feeding. They showed respect and concern, they were committed to their job 100%. Sadly, my Father passed but the team was right there with us showing love, care and support for our entire family...They actually felt like family. I highly recommend them for any personal care needs people have for their loved ones!
