A Parkinson’s disease diagnosis can be life-changing, presenting significant challenges for both individuals and their families. As this progressive neurological condition impacts movement, coordination, and independence, personalized care is vital to preserve quality of life.

What Is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive nervous system disorder that primarily affects movement. Symptoms develop gradually and vary by person, but over time, daily tasks like dressing, walking, or eating may become difficult without support.

Though Parkinson’s is not curable, early care and ongoing support can dramatically improve a person’s ability to live safely and comfortably at home.

Parkinson’s Care in Cumming, GACommon Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease

Recognizing early symptoms of Parkinson’s is crucial for timely diagnosis and effective care planning. Below are some of the most common signs to watch for:

  • Tremors or shaking in the hands, arms, or legs
Often beginning on one side of the body, tremors are a hallmark of Parkinson’s and may appear even when the muscles are at rest.
  • Muscle stiffness or rigidity
Stiffness in the arms, legs, or joints can limit range of motion and make everyday tasks like walking or reaching difficult.
  • Slowness of movement (bradykinesia)
Movements may become noticeably slower over time, affecting activities like standing up, getting dressed, or eating.
  • Difficulty with balance and coordination
Seniors may appear unsteady, take shorter steps, or experience sudden falls due to impaired motor control and reflexes.
  • Changes in handwriting or speech
Handwriting may become small and cramped (micrographia), and speech may become softer, slurred, or more monotone.
  • Shuffling gait or difficulty walking
Walking may involve dragging feet, shorter strides, or a hunched posture, often progressing to freezing episodes.
  • Fatigue, mood changes, or depression
Parkinson’s can impact energy levels and emotional health, leading to anxiety, apathy, or a loss of motivation.

If your loved one in Cumming or Forsyth County, GA is experiencing these symptoms, consult a neurologist and consider developing a care plan for ongoing support at home.

We used Assisting Hands of Forsyth and North Fulton to help care for my Father and I cannot say enough good things about the staff and management team. They were in our home 24 / 7 for a month and the care they provided was Five Star. They assisted with all the daily living tasks from bathing, dressing, and restroom needs as well as moving Dad from a hospital bed to a chair and assisted with feeding. They showed respect and concern, they were committed to their job 100%. Sadly, my Father passed but the team was right there with us showing love, care and support for our entire family...They actually felt like family. I highly recommend them for any personal care needs people have for their loved ones!
