The holiday season is traditionally one of joy and love, but many struggle with the stress and high expectations. Seniors especially are vulnerable to a number of dangers this time of year:
- Trip hazards. Falls are the number one cause of injury in seniors, and unfamiliar decorations and clutter can exacerbate the problem.
- Who doesn’t love a scented holiday candle? Make sure to locate them away from holiday décor and any other flammables.
- With all the running around we do this time of year, make sure to check in on loved ones frequently. I’ve written before about the risks of isolation and loneliness; the holiday season is peak time for this.
If you’re able to visit the seniors in your life over the next few weeks, enjoy it! Take the opportunity to use the attached checklist to make sure their quality of life remains high now and for the rest of the New Year. Or use this checklist as an excuse to go visit them! Make sure your loved ones are safe, healthy, and engaged by going over each of these points with them. If you need assistance, give Assisting Hands a call! We’re happy to help and we are honored to be a trusted partner to our clients’ families.
