The AARP reports (https://www.aarp.org/research/topics/life/info-2018/loneliness-social-connections.html) that “about one-third of U.S. adults age 45 and older report feeling lonely.” Loneliness and social isolation have serious health consequences for seniors. According to the CDC (https://www.cdc.gov/aging/publications/features/lonely-older-adults.html), “social isolation was associated with about a 50% increased risk of dementia.” Heart disease and stroke also had huge increases in prevalence.
A 50% higher risk for dementia! That makes loneliness a public health crisis we can all do something about. Check in on your loved ones, friends, and neighbors. Go for a walk and chat with people you meet in your neighborhood. It’s good for you and for them!
At Assisting Hands, companionship and socialization is something that we do with almost every client. Whether it is chatting, playing cards, or going out for a walk or a drive, just having another person around to interact with is healthy. Contact us if there’s someone in your life that you are concerned with – we’re happy to help!
