How to Make Sure Seniors Bathe Safely at Home

February 22, 2023psutton

As seniors start to have more trouble with daily tasks, the really personal ones, like bathing, may be giving them the most trouble. There are solutions, like hiring personal care at home, that can make bathing much safer and easier for seniors to do as often as necessary.

Create a Safe and Comfortable Environment for Bathing

A safe environment makes all the difference for seniors during baths and showers. Caregivers should look out for anything that could become a tripping hazard or that could contribute to slipping and falling. Seniors are also more susceptible to feeling cold, so keeping the bathroom warm before bathing can be a huge help.

Talk about Needs and Preferences

Preferences factor heavily as well. Some seniors feel safer in a tub having a bath. Others are more comfortable in a shower with the help of grab bars. Learning about those preferences helps caregivers to further adjust the environment to ensure their family member can safely and comfortably bathe. But more might be necessary to get to that point.

Add Assistive Tools and Devices

There are tons of different assistive devices and tools that are designed to make bathing easier for seniors and disabled people. Shower benches, shower chairs, grab bars, non-slip shower mats, and more are all available to add to the bathroom. Depending on health issues, mobility concerns, and other variables, some or all of these might be a good idea to include in the bathroom.

Account for Mobility and Other Issues

If an aging adult has mobility problems or limitations out of the shower, those are going to be amplified by the act of bathing. Finding ways to work around these limitations is important and some assistive devices can help with this. It’s also possible that some additional assistance from home care providers makes a difference.

Consider Getting Some Help

Personal care at home can be instrumental in helping seniors to safely bathe. It’s difficult for some aging adults to accept help with something as intimate as bathing, but when it comes to being as safe as possible then having help may be necessary. Personal caregivers above all want to help seniors to be safe and to preserve their dignity while offering that help. By making personal care at home available, difficulties around bathing may become a non-issue.

Be Emotionally Supportive

One thing that family caregivers can do when bathing is becoming more difficult for seniors is to be as emotionally supportive as possible. There are a lot of psychological challenges to get around in order to accept help and to make changes. Being able to talk it out can help seniors to feel more reassured that everything is going to be okay.

Ignoring challenges around bathing is just not an option for family caregivers. Seniors need to be able to count on having support and a safe environment in order to meet their hygiene needs. Personal care at home can make all of the difference.
