Summer is coming and that means seniors need to start protecting their skin from the sun’s rays now. Even when seniors are indoors the powerful rays of the sun can damage their fragile skin. As seniors get older, part of the aging process is that the fat pad under the skin will disappear. That leaves skin susceptible to damage from sun, wind, heat, cold, and other environmental elements. As part of your senior’s normal hygiene routine, personal care at home can help by moisturizing their skin and making sure it is getting exfoliated. Seniors can also use these tips to take care of their skin during the harsh summer sun and heat:
Drink Water
Part of keeping skin healthy is staying hydrated. When seniors are dehydrated their skin can become dry and prone to flaking or cracking, especially on their feet. Seniors should be drinking water at least once an hour during the warm weather because they will be losing more water to sweat throughout the day. It doesn’t matter if seniors drink plain water, sparkling water, iced tea without sugar, or fruit water as long as the drinking more water. Making a non-alcoholic summer punch with fruit water and ginger ale can be a fun way to encourage seniors to drink more.
Wear Sunscreen
Sunscreen is a necessity for seniors every day, not just when they are planning on being outside. Seniors should use waterproof sunblock that has an SPF of 30 or higher. And it should be applied more than once throughout the day because it will wear off. There are many different types of sunscreen that seniors can wear ranging from creams to sprays to powder gels that dry quickly on the skin so they don’t feel sticky or wet. So even seniors that dislike certain textures will be able to find a sunscreen that they can comfortably wear. It’s a good idea to put sunscreen in the car, in your senior parent’s bag or purse, in a gym bag or their golf bag, and anywhere else they might go so that there is always a bottle close by if needed.
Wear Sun Protection
Seniors also should wear sun protection. A visor or a hat is something all seniors should have. They should also wear sunglasses if they are going outside to protect their eyes and the delicate skin around their eyes. Dressing in light layers that include a top layer with long sleeves is a good way to protect the skin on their arms.
Wear Sandals
Sandals for seniors should have good supportive soles so that seniors will be able to walk comfortably. But sandals are the best warm weather footwear for seniors because they will prevent sweat from building up on their feet and allow for air circulation that will help keep their feet dry.
