10 Common Tasks For In-Home Caregivers

Ten Common Tasks Handled By Family Caregivers

Acting as a caregiver for a family member can be difficult. At the same time, however, it can also be incredibly rewarding. In fact, many caregivers find that helping a loved one is one of the most meaningful things they have done in their life.

There are ten general tasks that most caregivers handle.

The Top Ten Caregiver Responsibilities

The role caregivers play can change on a daily basis. Overall, however, there are some essential tasks that need to be handled on a regular basis.

Below are the top ten responsibilities that are typically handled by caregivers to give you a better idea of what the job entails:

1. Identifying Medical Care Requirements

Most elderly people take medication. Many of them also struggle with pain. Before becoming a caregiver, sit down with your loved one and their doctor to come up with a list of medical care requirements. That way, you can provide the care and assistance that they need.

2. Helping With Personal Care

With age, tasks like bathing or going to the bathroom often become impossible without assistance. As a caregiver, your duties include helping your loved one with these types of personal care tasks.

3. Socializing

Everyone, regardless of their age, can benefit from companionship. Being there to spend time socializing with your loved one can make a real difference in their quality of life. This is the perfect time for you to focus on your relationship with one another, building a deeper bond and making sure that your loved one knows how grateful you are to have them in your life.

4. Cleaning

Everyday cleaning tasks often become more challenging with age. As a caretaker, one of your duties is to help with jobs around the house like vacuuming the floors, sweeping, emptying the garbage can, or washing dirty dishes.

5. Helping With Medication

Keeping track of which medications to take and when to take them can be challenging. One of your caregiver responsibilities involves tracking your loved one’s medication to ensure that they are following their doctor’s orders.

6. Monitoring Their Needs

Tracking how well your loved one’s care plan is working out for them is another important task. As a caregiver, you need to closely monitor how they are doing with their current care plan. If there are things that aren’t working, it is important to meet with their doctor or medical provider to discuss any necessary changes.

7. Coming Up With A Care Plan

Managing your time is also important. Before you commit to becoming a caregiver, sit down and come up with a list of all of the services that your loved one needs. This will help you get a better idea of the overall commitment required. It also helps ensure that all of their basic needs are covered.

8. Cooking

One of the most important ways that caregivers help is by preparing meals. This involves going for groceries, preparing their food, and making sure that their nutritional needs are being met.

9. Transfer Assistance

Oftentimes, older patients have difficulty getting out of bed in the morning or moving between different parts of their home. Helping them transfer from one area to another is another important part of being a caregiver.

10. Providing Transportation

Getting around becomes more difficult with age. Most elderly people require assistance to get to their doctor’s office or to participate in activities around the community.

While the level of care required for every person is unique, these are some of the most common tasks handled by caregivers. Use them as a starting point when designing your own care plan for your loved one.
