10 Tips For Communicating With Seniors
Part 1
Hiring a caregiver for your loved one can cause significant changes in your family’s dynamics. Multiple financial, social, emotional, and physical issues may arise and affect each family member’s feelings, responsibilities, and roles. As a result, this change in the family dynamic could lead to regular disagreements and tension.
Disagreements can be pretty frustrating. However, family members can get along better by learning healthy communication. Ultimately, it will be easier to interact with each other, and there will be less tension. Here are tips you can apply to ensure you have healthy communication:
1. Laugh Whenever You Can
Per the adage, truly, laughter is the best medicine. A humorous moment often arises even during the most stressful and difficult caregiving situation. When it does, take this opportunity to lighten matters. Sharing laughter with your loved ones can build closeness and ease any tension you may have. Remember not to laugh at the expense of your family members but rather laugh together.
2. Ask Questions
If you struggle to strike a conversation, you can always ask questions. Most people never ask seniors about their life. One of the best ways to get to know someone and be closer to them is by asking questions. You may have grown up or been raised by a person and not know them as well as you think. So, as they grow older, bridge that gap by asking questions that will help you understand them better.
3. Choose Your Battles
Most seniors will face challenges like memory problems, loneliness, decreased stamina, and mobility limitations. Naturally, you will want to ensure their wellbeing. However, taking care of everything can be overwhelming and frustrating for you, and embarrassing to the senior. Therefore, prioritize what issues to address and enjoy the little wins you may experience.
4. Think About What It Feels Like To Be Older
As seniors age, most of them will experience a series of losses, and they will want to be in control of their environment and themselves. On the other hand, it may be complicated and frustrating for you to communicate with a loved one. However, if they can participate in specific decisions and conversations, try your best to keep them involved. Be mindful that helping them with everything may make them feel like they are giving up control of everything.
5. Select The Appropriate Environment
Whenever you want to have important and meaningful conversations, try not to have them in an environment with distracting activities or competing noises. Lower the volume of the radio and TV or turn them off. While talking to a senior, ensure you face them, so it is easier for them to read your lips and deduce your facial expressions.
If you are talking in a group, do not let the elder be at the end of your seating arrangement. Instead, have them sit in the middle of the group so they can be part of the conversation.
