When You Should Move Your Elderly Parents To Houston Assisted Living
People can feel intimidated and overwhelmed when they move to assisted living. Moving from a family home and going through household items and marking an end of a chapter is difficult too. However, moving into assisted living also means it’s the start of a new journey and there will be new adventures awaiting.
People are living much longer these days. Many seniors want to remain in their houses for as long as possible. The following are signs that it may be time to consider moving to assisted living:
1. Loneliness Or Feelings Of Isolation
Seniors’ health can become greatly affected when they start to suffer from chronic loneliness and isolation. Depression can occur in seniors when there’s a lack of community present. In fact, it’s been linked to various health issues such as heart disease and dementia.
Sometimes loneliness and isolation can lead to seniors engaging in unhealthy behaviors. This includes abusing their medications or drinking alcohol or smoking. Not only that, but it also increases the risk of mortality.
2. Increase In Frailty & Decline In Health
The fact is that more than 60 million Americans aged 50 and up have a chronic medical condition. As people age, chronic conditions often require more care. If a senior is in assisted living, then they’ll be around professionals who are trained to prevent or handle certain crisis.
3. Mismanaging Finances
As people age, they sometimes don’t keep up with paying their bills. If you notice that your loved one is not paying their bills or that collectors are making contact, or that there is a pile of debt, then it may be time for assisted living. Furthermore, seniors are at high risk for financial scams, especially when they live on their own. Such scams can ruin their finances, including their retirement savings.
4. Hoarding
Hoarding can be very dangerous for seniors because it increases the chances of an accident from occurring. This includes falling or having items fall on them. Hoarding affects seniors between 55 and 95 three times more than adults between the age of 34 and the age of 44. Hoarding creates a fire hazard and can block first responders from getting into the property or parts of the property.
5. Hygiene
Another sign that it’s time for assisted living is poor hygiene. In order to maintain good health and wellness, one must have good hygiene. Seniors are sometimes afraid of taking a shower or bath due to being scared of falling. If you notice your loved one not showering, bathing, constantly having messy hair and bad body odor, then it may be time to consider assisted living.
