What Are The Strengths Of A Caregiver?
Part 2
- (Continuation) What things do I naturally perform well in and am good at?
- What things am I eager to do?
- What are the best traits that I personally possess?
- How do I deal with problems and the strengths I use to deal with them?
- What things am I great at doing well?
You should not try to be bashful or attempt to censor yourself when answering these questions. You should simply be honest and closely think about the things that you’re good at. These may be situations, personal traits, particular activities, or even different variations of these things.
In the event that you’re having difficulty figuring out your strengths as a caregiver, simply ask someone that knows you quite well to go through the questions and answer them for you. For example, at work, what do you think others would indicate are your strengths? In the event that you’re trying to get a new job, think about what you would say were your strengths since you’ll likely be asked this in the interview.
Exercise #2
In the next exercise, pay attention to the statements below since they will help you to identify your particular caregiver strengths. You’ll have to state your level of agreement or disagreement with every statement by choosing one of the following:
- Never or hardly
- Sometimes
- Most times or all of the time
Keep in mind that there are no correct or incorrect answers. Simply choose the response that is the most accurate for you. Make sure that you read and consider each statement before answering.
I personally think of myself as a person who is…
- Optimistic (Always, Sometimes, Mostly Never – Make a recording of your answers)
- Organized
- Resilient
- Confident
- Finds humor in all situations
- Compassionate
- Flexible
- Patient
Unleashing your strengths as a caregiver
Once you have identified your caregiver strengths you can now use these strengths when you are caregiving. You can start by consciously using them when engaging in family caregiving.
You will also have a greater understanding of the areas where you aren’t so great and your particular challenges.
Additionally, you should harness this type of awareness so that you can create a specific action plan to deal with your challenges. Be sure to limit this plan and simply give them to other persons who are strong in these areas. Alternatively, you can work on these areas yourself so that you can become more proficient in the areas that you lack in.
You can definitely improve your strengths and develop other lagging traits or weaknesses. You can challenge yourself to change and become a better caregiver.
So, the question remains, exactly how will you make use of your strengths?
Return to the list of your strengths and consider the following:
- Can you change your current caregiving situation and tasks in order to focus on your particular strengths
- Would you be able to give the tasks that are your weaknesses to others?
- How can you leverage your strengths?
- Are there any ways that you can improve your weaknesses?
- Are there any particular traits that mean a lot to you?
