Getting A Caregiver For Your Senior Parents

3 Vital Pointers For Hiring A Caregiver

Hiring a caregiver is an effective way to let your senior adult live independently despite cognitive or physical challenges. Caregivers assist senior adults with performing a wide range of tasks including managing their medications, meal preparation, dressing, bathing, changing bed linen, doing light housework or laundry, and more. But you should be extremely cautious when bringing a stranger into your home – because they will learn highly personal information about you and see you at your most vulnerable. Some older adults are pretty modest and don’t feel comfortable with such an arrangement. They may feel stressed at first before feeling better about the arrangement. Here are 3 important tips to hire a caregiver for your senior adult.

Find Out Who’s On The Team

Caregiver services may assign one or several people to take care of your senior adult depending on his/her needs. They may be assigned on a rotating basis. The first thing is to find out who these people are and when you can expect each person to show up.

Ask the caregiver service to notify you in advance in case one of the usual caregivers is not turning up for duty. They should inform you in advance about who will be filling in. It isn’t a problem if you work with a solo caregiver who doesn’t work for a large caregiver service. However, you should have a backup plan. For example, if you hire a solo caregiver to take care of your loved one, decide in advance how they will be handling illness, emergencies, or days off depending on the care your loved one needs.

Get To Know Your Caregivers

There isn’t a level playing field when you decide to hire a caregiver to assist your loved one. The caregiver knows a lot of intimate details about you and your loved one while you’ll know very little about them. Getting to know more about your care team will make you feel more comfortable. Ask the caregiver where he or she is from and whether they have a family or children, and what they will be doing in their off time. It will help build a solid relationship with the caregiver.

In fact, many home health aides are from foreign cultures and countries. The people they are caring about are from different backgrounds, and there is a lot of learning going on. Mutual respect is important to build a sound professional relationship over time.

Try To Let Go Of Modesty

You may feel awkward at first having a stranger in your home. Your loved one may feel embarrassed about having to let that stranger help them bathe and get dressed. But a caregiver is a trained professional who provides a service – they see people in their homes and birthday suits almost every day.

The best thing is to try to let go of your modesty and let the professional do their job. Once you get to know these people better, they will feel like trusted members of your care team. You may even look forward to their visits in the future.
