10 Ways To Take Care Of Yourself As A Caregiver In Houston
Part 1
caregivers take the time to look after themselves. Many of them work round the clock caring for or thinking about, their clients or loved ones. Some believe that having some ‘me’ time or fun makes the selfish. This is farther from the truth. Setting aside at least 2 hours of your time (every day) for personal hygiene and care, or rest is good for your health. It is by looking after yourself that you’ll be able to provide the best services to your clients. This is one of the reasons why flight attendants advise you to put on your oxygen mask first before you can assist anyone else. That said, you need to look after yourself first before thinking of your clients. Outlined below are some of the ways you can care for yourself as a caregiver every day.
1. Take Regular Breaks From Work
As much as you are dedicated to looking after your client, you still need to grab at least 20 minutes of break between tasks. Use the break time to relax or break the monotony of your surroundings. You could also ask a friend or colleague (trained caregiver) to stand in for you for some time, say a day. This is particularly recommended if tasked with the client requires 24-hour care. Use the full day to relax or even go for a short vacation. Be sure to engage in relaxing activities during your time off, such as going for a movie, taking an Epsom bath, listen to relaxing music, or even read a book.
2. Get Regular Exercise
As a caregiver, you need to get at least 30 minutes of exercise every day. Exercise is not only good for your health but also an excellent stress buster. You don’t, however, have to go to the gym to exercise. Simple exercises such as walking, talking the stairs, jogging in the morning, and even running on the treadmill are enough to keep you fit. You could also ask a colleague to exercise with you. Talking a walk outdoors also allows you to breathe the fresh air, hence come back relaxed and re-energized.
3. Eat Healthily
While fast foods may seem like a quick fix for an empty stomach, they aren’t particularly nutritious. Some of these foods are only loaded in trans fats and carbohydrates. Going for whole and nutritious meals, however, provides the body with the essential nutrients required for a healthy body. Be sure to include lean proteins, vegetables, whole grains, and cereals, as well as root tubers to your diet plan. It would also be advisable to prepare a little extra and keep it in the refrigerator.
4. Seek Treatment/Rest If Feeling Rundown Or Burning With Fever
Caregivers too, do get sick. Seek medical attention if you don’t feel well or catch the flu. You should also take some time off and rest if feeling fatigued and too tired to go to work. Overworking yourself will only make the condition worse, or even harder to recover. You also don’t want to transmit something contagious to the person you are caring for. In addition to seeking medical attention, you might want to have someone else take care of you to be able to recover quickly. Only report back to work after recovering fully.
