Part 1
It is important to do what you can to be healthy as you age. Being healthy benefits us, both physically and mentally. Taking action now will help you in the future.
Older adults can do an array of things to promote their physical health, but there are six top ways they should try. All of the below six ways have a great track record. Not only that, but these six ways give the most bang for the buck. This is because they offer benefits to just about anyone who implements them.
Even if you currently have a chronic illness, the chances are you can still benefit from the below. The truth is you can’t go wrong with doing some or all of the below activities. With that said, here are six proven ways to promote physical health:
1. Exercise
You should exercise regularly because it helps improve mobility and strength. Not only that, but exercising can greatly improve your physique, but it is important to know your limits so you don’t injure yourself. Furthermore, exercising can boost your mood, which can have a positive impact on the rest of your body.
You don’t have to do hardcore exercise sessions, as research has shown that even doing a little bit of exercising can have tremendous benefits for your body and mind. The bottom line is that doing a little exercise is better than doing nothing at all. The key is to find an exercise that keeps you moving, such as walking or classes designed for older adults.
2. Stop Smoking
Smoking can ruin your overall health, including your physical health. Smoking can cause severe damage to the lungs and it puts users at risk of suffering a stroke, heart attack, or developing various types of cancers. Not only that, but diseases caused by smoking can cause you to suffer from symptoms for many years to come.
Older adults who have already developed health problems due to smoking can take action. They can reduce their symptoms by quitting smoking. By quitting, a senior will reduce their chances of dying prematurely.
Nicotine is extremely addictive, which makes quitting smoking very difficult. Only around six percent of people are able to quit smoking on their own. The good news is there are proven ways to help you quit, such as medications and counseling. Combining counseling and medications can significantly increase your chances of quitting smoking for good.
Bear in mind that it might take a few tries before you can finally quit. Just because you fail once does not mean you’ll keep failing. Try to quit as many times as necessary.
3. Get Plenty Of Sleep
Severe sleep deprivation can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease, reduced immune function, and more. Sleep deprivation can cause you to feel fatigued. This can make getting things done difficult, and your mood will be negatively impacted.
