Knowing How To Stay Healthy As You Get Older In Houston
Part 2
Keep Your Brain Active
Keeping your creativity levels up is key. This is even more important once you retire and you no longer have a challenging career. While physical activities will also help to keep your brain active and alert, other types of activities such as crossword puzzles, word games, learning new skills or languages will strengthen your brain and your memory.
Stay Connected & Positive
There are lots of challenges that we have to face when we start to age. The most common ones include losing your health, independence, and loved ones. Despite these challenges, it is important to remain strong and find a positive way to deal with these difficulties.
Below is a list of tips:
- Accept The Things That Have Changed In Your Life: Accepting and letting things go that you no longer have control over will lower anxiety and stress in your life.
- Remain Grateful: Remind yourself of everything that you still have such as friends and family members.
- Reach Out To Others: Find other people that are faced with similar problems. This could include support groups or volunteer in your community. This will keep your focus off your hardships and allow you to socialize with others. Physical interactions also help to keep depression at bay, and this is far better than emails or texts. Make an effort to find new friends when one of your friends has passed on or moved away.
- Acknowledge Your Feelings: This is especially important when you have experienced a loss. Don’t try to bury or hide your emotions. When you face them head-on, this is the healthy and best way to navigate through them. Talk to a professional, family member, or a friend. You could also start a journal to express how you are truly feeling.
- Maintain Your Sense Of Purpose: Just because you are no longer working, it doesn’t mean that your life no longer has a purpose. You still have lots to add to this world. This is an excellent opportunity to reflect on all your experiences throughout your life, write memoirs, and lessons you may have learned along the way. You also have a lot more time on your hands to spend with your loved ones (grandchildren, nephews, nieces, your children). You could also start working on new hobbies or pick up on one of your older ones. Other great ideas include traveling to different cities or countries, learn new languages, a musical instrument or a sport. You will also have more time to visit museums or go to plays or concerts. These are the activities that can help you to maintain a sense of purpose and joy.
What Is Your Sleep Quality Like?
Many adults struggle with sleep issues. These include waking up frequently, daytime sleepiness, and insomnia. Low quality sleep often has to do with bad sleeping habits. Below are a few tips to focus on:
- Keep Artificial Light Low: Artificial light will suppress the production of melatonin a hormone that causes sleepiness. This means switching off your computer, phone, and TV before you go to sleep, and to use low-wattage bulbs.
- Improve Your Bedtime Habits: Think about slow and soft music, and a warm and relaxing bath before you get into bed.
- Make Sure Your Bedroom Is A Space That Is Conducive To Sleeping: Your bedroom should be cool, quiet, and dark, and your mattress should be comfortable.
- Exercise Regularly: Regular exercise every day close to bedtime will encourage better sleep.
