Nursing Home Vs Skilled Nursing
Part 2
(Continuation)Skilled Nursing Facilities can help assist with daily tasks such as eating, using the bathroom, showering/bathing, dressing, etc., just as in a nursing home. However, the patients in a skilled nursing facility are typically only there for a short recovery period. After this time, they go home or to an assisted living center to continue their recovery. Many of these patients don’t have chronic conditions or terminal illnesses.
If you’re in a skilled nursing facility for the short term, you’ll likely only be there for about 3 weeks. The costs shouldn’t be too outrageous and if you’re on Medicare, most of them should be covered. However, if you’re there for a longer period of time, you may need to have more insurance. For example, Medicare will help to pay out if you have Part A and a qualifying hospital stay and have met all of the requirements.
In-Home Skilled Nursing Care
There are also some patients that prefer to stay in their own home or stay in their own home due to lack of funds. For example, a registered nurse visits daily, or a physical therapist visits weekly to assist in the recovery. Such services are offered for the following conditions:
- Chemo
- IVs
- Physical, occupational, or speech therapy
- Catheter
- Dressing Changes
- IV port dressing changes
- Feeding Tubes
- TPI
- Wound Care
- Injections/Blood Draws
- Health monitoring
- Training of other family members or friends to perform some of the services
While this list isn’t comprehensive, it does encompass many of the services that are offered for in-home care services. Actual services will be dependent upon the agency, and your location. If you require frequent care, intermittent care, or other services, you may have to go to an outpatient facility. It will also be dependent upon your insurance and what is and isn’t covered for your care.
Many patients will have a caregiver who comes in and assists them with activities of daily living. He or she will assist with cooking, cleaning, bathing, transportation, shopping, and other services such as laundry and other chores that may be more challenging for the patient.
