Top Qualities Of A Qualified Houston Caregiver
Part 2
8. Dependable
Most patients are left completely in the hands of a caregiver, and in these instances, dependability is crucial. Having a dependable caregiver means that the patient and their family can feel at ease knowing that everything will get addressed in a timely manner the way it was discussed.
9. Supportive
Encouragement and support are ideal qualities in any caregiver, but when working with elderly patients, it is especially important to offer words of encouragement. Caregivers should know how to help patients push their boundaries further and achieve more than they think they can. A good example is making sure that patients get the necessary physical and mental exercise daily. Many patients try to get out of exercising, but with the right kind of caregiver, this can all change.
10. Trustworthy
Trust and honesty go hand in hand, and when referring to a live-in caregiver, these traits are indispensable. Patients rely on caregivers to manage their finances and household tasks, which is why they need to hone a high level of trust.
11. Silent
Silence refers to confidentiality when it comes to a patient’s privacy or well-being. Caregivers are entrusted with a lot of personal information, and patients should be able to trust that everything they divulge is safely kept confidential by their appointed caregiver.
12. Humor
Nothing says more about a caregiver’s personality than their ability to infuse humor even into tough or negative situations. There are times when patients will feel directly affected by certain events and may feel depressed in some way. A caregiver with a humorous side will know what to say to make the situation lighter and easier to cope with.
13. Emotional
Many caregivers tend to toughen up in an effort to close themselves off from experiencing negative emotions. Patients may eventually pass on or their conditions may deteriorate, in which case, a caregiver needs to be emotionally tough enough to get a handle on the situation. It is never acceptable for a caregiver to remain aloof or choose not to connect with a patient for fear of getting hurt.
14. Strength
Physical strength and good stamina are also an integral part of providing well-rounded care to patients. A caregiver will focus on strengthening their upper body to have the ability to provide perfect care to frail patients. This is especially true when a patient needs help moving out of bed or taking a bath.
15. Responsible
There are times when a caregiver may need to go above the call of duty. This could mean helping a patient beyond paid hours to take care of their lighter household tasks, chores, cooking, and even interacting with younger family members such as grandchildren while they visit.
16. Organized
Patients may want to avoid medications or choose not to take them, but a caregiver must always remain organized and attentive. This involves keeping track of when and which medications the patient has taken.
