What Is Elderly Care Services & The Options For Your Mom’s Needs

When mom gets older she needs a little help. Elderly care Houston services are easily accessible and are often a great solution for those who work and cannot take care of mom during the day. People have been living longer with the advancements in elderly care. Elderly people are prone to health risks that people in younger demographics aren’t.

Elderly care helps prevent these risks from becoming life-threatening. A common problem associated with the elderly is falling down. This can be fatal for someone who’s the body has lost the ability to mend its bones the way they did when they were younger. For elderly people who are at risk of falling, elderly care can help them prevent the surgery and hospitalization that would result from a fall that did this much damage.

This is the importance of elderly care services. They’ll make sure that your loved ones are taken care of and helping them live a normal life. If you wish to work for senior care, you should know what are the qualities do you need to work with the elderly.

Depending on the level of functioning mom has, she may be placed into assisted living or a nursing home. Other types of elderly care include subsidized housing and in-home nurses.

It’s important to learn about all the options before making such a big decision. Your physician will be able to recommend the appropriate steps to take. Here are the care options:

Subsidized Housing

Some elderly people move into subsidized housing once they reach the age where they are on a fixed income. While this does not pertain to taking care of mom’s medical needs, it’s the best solution for those who do not have the means to support their parents financially. It will ensure that they have a permanent place to stay. Subsidized housing for the elderly is often apartment complexes that take only seniors and the disabled. They have social activities were mom will be able to meet friends her own age.

A CNA

A certified nursing assistant can help mom if she is becoming too frail to do the chores that she used to. Often seniors are unable to vacuum or sweep because of the pain that arthritis brings and the risk of falling down. A CNA can take care of these chores for them. A CNA is also able to help her take care of her hygiene without the risk of her hurting herself. CNAs typically help elderly people in and out of the bathtub. If your mom is completely immobilized, a CNA can give her a sponge bath. CNAs can also make sure elderly people remember to take their meds.

A Nurse

Most people who hire an RN for their mother have them come over less frequently than a CNA. An RN does not do chores or help with things like bathing. RNs travel to elderly patients to check up on chronic medical conditions that they have. It may be too difficult for your mother to travel to a doctor. The issue may be that she’d have to go too often. A great example is a woman with congestive heart failure. She needs someone to come over and check her heart rate and blood pressure to make sure her condition isn’t getting worse, and that she’s responding to her medication.

Assistant Living

Assistant living is for elderly people who do not need intense nursing care. Many assistant living facilities have nurses and CNAs who help patients and check up on their health. By the time most patients reach an assisted living, they are already in a wheelchair. Typically, assistant living patients have not developed any type of dementia or are in an early stage of it. Assistant living facilities prepare meals for them. Your mother will get help with getting dressed as well. Assistant living facilities give patients the opportunity to socialize even if they are immobile.

Nursing Homes

Nursing homes are designed for elderly patients who need an advanced level of care. Most seniors who are in late-stage dementia live in nursing homes. There are nursing homes that are locked down and meant for psych patients. Other nursing homes are less restricted and meant for people with advanced medical problems. Many nursing homes also provide hospice care.

What’s Right For My Mom?

The level of care needed depends on the recommendation of her doctor and other medical professionals. It’s important to also take your own feelings into account. Of course, listen to the desires of your mother so she can feel the most comfortable.

The price you pay for elderly care will depend on the needs of your mother. Talk to the service provider and discuss how much elderly care costs.
