IMPORTANT HOME OXYGEN DO’S AND DON’TS
Oxygen tanks and concentrators CAN explode when they become over heated if not stored properly or used properly or if they become damaged so we are sharing important home oxygen do’s and don’ts. It is very important to fully read and follow these instructions for the safety of the patient, their family and the caregiver.

Oxygen feeds fires so it is very important to keep them away from anything flammable at all times. This includes skin products, oil plug ins, electric cigarettes, cleaning products that contain oil, grease or alcohol. Stay away from electronics, appliances and heat sources.

Tanks and concentrators can become damaged if they are dropped or hit with an object that can cause them to become crushed. They need to be stored in a place with proper air ventilation so they do not over heat and they should not be plugged in using extension cords. They need to remain upright at all times.

When the oxygen is not in use it is always best to turn off the oxygen completely at the tank or concentrator and do not place the nasal cannula or mask on any surface that may allow dust or fibers to get onto or into the items.
If a person is requiring the use of oxygen while sleeping it is best to use 100% cotton linens to prevent a possible electric shock while in bed.

TAKING CARE WHEN WORKING WITH OXYGEN TANKS

It is important to notify utility companies when on home oxygen. The meter will be flagged so if there is a power outage or a gas leak in the area the proper measurements will be taken for the safety of the person using the oxygen. If there is a power outage and the supply of oxygen is running low it is best to contact the local fire department for assistance. It is always a great idea to have a sign on all doors of the house stating there is oxygen in use as well as a no smoking sign including E cigarettes.

When driving a vehicle with home oxygen, the car insurance company should be notified that they may be transporting oxygen at times. If driving with a small portable tank it is ok to safely place it upright on the floor of the front seat or in the passenger seat. If driving with a larger tank it is important to place it in the back seat only and secure it in place so it does not move while driving. This is the only time it is ok to place a tank on its side for a short period time. It is never ok to place any oxygen in the trunk of a vehicle. It is best to keep a window open at least half way for proper ventilation so the oxygen tank does not over heat. A liquid oxygen tank can never lay on its side even during transport.

Anyone on oxygen should be a minimum of 6 feet away from all heat sources.
