FAQ

Does long-term care insurance cover in-home care?

It very often does. You will have to look at the details of your Long Term Care Insurance (LTCi) policy to understand what is covered. Most LTCi policies do cover the cost of personal care (also called “custodial care”), which allows seniors to stay home longer and healthier in their home.

We offer a complimentary LTCi policy review for seniors and their families, where this question, and so many more, will be answered.

How do I find in-home care in Dedham, Massachusetts, that accepts long-term care insurance?

You’d have to ask each agency, but our agency is certified in LTCi and a huge advocate of it for our families.

Can you review my long-term care insurance policy to see what home care services are covered?

Yes! We would be happy to! Our team offers a complimentary LTCi policy review for seniors and their families. We can check which exact services are covered. This comprehensive review also answers the questions of whether you are currently eligible for the benefits, what these benefits are (do they include durable medical equipment, do they account for inflation).

How do I use my long-term care insurance to pay for home care?

It may be a good time to activate the Long Term Care Insurance policy you bought years, often decades ago, and for which you have been paying premiums monthly ever since. The first step is assessing your policy with experts and comparing it to your situation. Once that policy review is completed, you will know whether you can and should activate your policy to pay for home care. Our agency offers support every step of the way. We offer a free in-depth policy review that will help determine your next steps.

Do I need a doctor’s recommendation to use long-term care insurance for home care?

Yes, a doctor’s certification is generally required to prove you need help with a maximum of 3 Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) or that you have a cognitive impairment to trigger Long-Term Care insurance benefits. Every insurance policy needs to be carefully evaluated to ensure that the insured satisfies the required conditions.

When do long-term care insurance benefits start?

Your long-term care insurance benefits start after the insurance company has accepted your claim and you have satisfied the “elimination period” (also known as “waiting period”), which is the period during which you must pay for care out of pocket. The “elimination period” is a type of deductible, and it is spelled out in your policy. It is often 90 days, but can be as little as 20 or as many as 100 days. Just as important, what counts for the elimination period is also spelled out in your policy.

Do you work with long-term care insurance providers in Utah?

Fun fact: Massachusett residents have contracted long-term care insurance (LTCi) with over 20 long-term care insurance providers! We work with all of these providers to help our clients activate their claims and access every benefit they’ve earned.

Does long-term care insurance pay family caregivers?

Long-term care insurance policies often exclude family members from being caregivers.

How do I find a home care provider that accepts long-term care insurance?

Assisting Hands Dedham Home Care actively encourages families to review their LTCi policies to pay for home care services that they need and deserve.

Will you help file a long-term care insurance claim?

Absolutely. Assisting Hands Dedham Home Care actively guides you every step of the way, from reviewing your policy to assessing how much care is covered to helping you file and activate your policy.

Does long-term care insurance cover home modifications?

Sometimes. You will have to look at the details of your Long Term Care Insurance (LTCi) policy to understand what is covered. Some LTCi policies do cover the cost of home modifications and durable medical equipment (DME), and these can be a Godsend for families.

How quickly can home care services start after insurance approval?

You will have to satisfy a “deductible” period, called the “elimination period”, before the LTCi company will start paying for home care services. The “elimination period” is the period during which you must pay for care out of pocket, and lasts anywhere from 30 to 120 days.

What type of care is typically not covered in a long-term care policy?

Mental or nervous disorder or disease, other than Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia, is not covered. Neither is alcohol nor drug addiction. Illness or injury caused by an act of war is not covered by LTCi, and neither is attempted suicide or intentionally self-inflicted injuries. LTCi will also not cover treatments already paid by the government.

My long-term care insurance premiums have increased so much that I don’t know if I can afford them anymore. What should I do?

Having long-term care insurance premiums increase over time can cause significant stress to the insured. Your insurance company could offer a one-sided deal to reduce premiums a little and reduce benefits by a lot. But all changes if you are claim-eligible, that is, you are in a position to activate your policy. With our free policy review, we will be able to evaluate if you are claim eligible and assess if it is the right time to start the claim process.
